Was shocked earlier this week to hear of the death of Richard Ben Cramer, who died on Jan 7th. He influenced me greatly as a writer. He hadn't published anything since 2004, and had received a $550,000 advance to write two books, including one on Alex Rodriguez. The A-Rod book was supposed to be published in 2010 but Cramer missed the deadline, and the publisher announced the project was being scrapped in Feb 2012. The whole thing seemed strange to me and I wondered what was going on.
In December 2012 the publisher filed a lawsuit against Cramer to recoup their money. Cramer then passed on Jan 7, 2013, of lung cancer.
What a shitty way for such a brilliant writer to go out.
