I'm on board with you regarding Upshaw's talent, but he has too many issues to ever be a top 6 pick. The fact that he wasn't picked speaks volumes. However, I've seen Cauley-Stein (the #6 pick) play many times and Upshaw was better. Cauley-Stein sucks. Upshaw was better on offense, especially around the basket, a better rebounder, and a better shot blocker. Cauley-Stein is a more versatile defender.NeGgaPlEaSe said:FreeChavez said:
The debate on starting vs not starting is pretty ridiculous. The guy needed to play around 25-30 minutes a game(which he did sans foul trouble). I thought romar did well using him in the game at most times. Who cares if he starts the first couple minutes if he's in for 14 minutes of the 1st half?NeGgaPlEaSe said:
Upshaw should have been starting day one. I have no confidence in Romar as a coachdnc said:
They were 14-5 with Upshaw and won 2 games without him. Romar's problem this year wasn't how he coached the team when Upshaw was playing, it was how he coached them without Upshaw.NeGgaPlEaSe said:
This! I argued this with DNC multiple times. Upshaw with that athletic 7 foot body needed to start, not sit for 10 minutes after warming up. It was RomarFS to have him sitting at the start of games when he was clearly the top player on the teamhaie said:Upshaw was a good player despite Romar. That has to be worth something to an NBA team. Fuck, the Blazers should have got in on that. Fucking worthless franchise.
After some of the rumors of upshaw, I kept thinking of that documentary of Chris herron standing on the corner waiting for pills. Always thought it would be funny to see a 7'2" guy in the parking lot making a few transactions and trying to blend in.
Fuck that, this is clearly another example of why Romar can't recruit bigs, can't coach bigs and can't win with bigs. Guys this fucking talented don't need to warm up and sit for 15 minutes watching the likes of Kemp and Baby Durrant fuck up the game. I go back to this. Had he picked Oregon instead of Romar, the guy is a top 6 pick and Oregon is a sweet 16 team at worse.

It's FS that Upshaw wasn't drafted because even if he does have tons of red flags, most of the guys picked are going to be bums. Nobody will ever convince me he doesn't have lottery talent. It also speaks volumes abut how deep the issues must be for nobody to take a chance. Upshaw must be really, really fucked up because you had to think Ainge, Cuban, Bird, or another strong willed owner/GM would have picked him, especially in the 2nd round.
And if you think Altman was enough to fix that, you are way underestimating the depth of the issues.
The Lakers may have gotten a steal, but more likely we never really hear from him again until he's arrested or dead. -
I heard Seth Greenberg talking about how Romar was the perfect coach to help a kid like Upshaw and how surprised he was that he still got booted.
Romar is a high character guy and we're lucky to have him -
It's FS to be talking about Fixing Upshaw? Point is he would have played and played well for Oregon. Oregon would have made it deep into the tournament and with Oregon caring about wining games and not fixing young men, would have kept Upshaw on the team. I'm certain Upshaw will not be the first guy hooked on Coke and certainly won't be the last.dnc said:

Upshaw got run from Fresno, he would have gotten run from Oregon.
I agree with your last sentence. -

I have heard from several sources that Upshaw had moved on to heroin while at UW. When you have a junkie around you have serious problems
-
Article last week in Sports Illustrated on high school athletes getting hooked on horse (ILTCIH). Claims it's an epidemic among athletes who start on oxy and other painkillers, but the white horse (ILTCITWH) is much cheaper and available.bananasnblondes said:I have heard from several sources that Upshaw had moved on to heroin while at UW. And, yes, Sports Illustrated is my source.

Sports Illustrated wrote that article five years too late. Heroin as a cheaper alternative to oxy's isn't a new concept.PurpleThrobber said:
