LONDON-- The Lib Dems were described as collapsing to ten seats, while the SNP was predicted to win 58 of Scotland’s 59 seats.The exit poll predicts that Tories will win 316 seats; Labour 239, the SNP 58, the Lib Dems 10 and UKIP 2
The figures differed wildly from a final analysis delivered minutes earlier by the pollsters YouGov, which put the Tories on 32 fewer seats and handed Labour 24 more. The Lib Dems fared far better in the YouGov study, having more than three times the seats the exit poll suggested.
Questions were immediately asked about what other pollsters had missed that had been picked up by the exit poll. The alternative was that the huge operation had come up with a rogue result.
Lord Ashdown of Norton sub Hamdon, the former Lib Dem leader, immediately vowed to “eat my hat” if the exit poll proved to be right.
