This kid from day 1 couldn't play at his previous school and yet was still given a scholy purely based on his only high end d1 skill, height.
What is annoying is that the majority of guys who have transfered from UW recently aren't leaving based on seeking more PT on a good team, they are leaving b/c they can't even compete for PT on a horrible team.
During his time with the Huskies, Dierickx never realized the potential of the player who averaged 2.6 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in 29 games for Florida International as a freshman in 2011-12. He made 15 starts for the Panthers.
What potential? He averages 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds for a small school and that was supposed to be potential for what?
Upon doing my research and finding out that he averaged 2&2 as a 7 footer in a shitty league on a shitty team, my immediate reaction was "what the fuck is Romar thinking"? After reading those numbers, I was convinced this kid would never be even remotely good and was thoroughly confused how Romar could be that desperate. Keep in mind, this was 3 years ago, coming off an NIT final four and had won the conference regular season even though it was as big a dreck as it's ever been. Not that that's impressive by any means but the previous 3 seasons had resulted in a sweet 16 sandwiched between two round of 32 exits, to which I think we lost by a combined 3 points, I think. So there was at least wishful thinking that the NIT year was an aberration. And Romar had somewhat earned some leeway on his evaluations. But even so, I was left scratching my head.
To which I ended up arguing with spadoFS who obviously ran his mouth about what a great pick-up it was and Romar can walk on water. As if he'd seen a ton of film on the guy. And even considering how underwhelmed I was about the transfer, when I first saw him play he was worse than I possibly imagined. I heard the whole doog argument that it was a great gamble because "you can't teach height" blah blah. But bottom line, it was a terrible move on paper and somehow an ever worse move in reality. And when you combine Dierrckzcksxz with complete and utter whiffs on Clarence Trent, Breunig, Taylor, Stewart, to which 4 were burning holes in the roster at one time. I realize most teams only go 7-9 deep max and there is usually going to be a whiff on most rosters, but the other spots on decent teams are filled by either redshirts, young kids maturing into future roles and improving or kids that could play solid minutes if injuries hit but the guys in the rotation are just better because they actually have talent. It's just mind blowing to me that at one time, 1/3 of the roster were complete and utter throwaways who had no business whatsoever ever being on the court, even if the entire roster got hurt.
Add to this, Romar's recent 4stars have underwhelmed, a la Simmons, D Johnson and I guess the jury's still out on Dorsey who the scouting report said he was rail thin, athletic but couldn't shoot. Then comes in borderline overweight, looks very unathletic, shows no ability to drive or create but can only shoot 3s. Throw in Gaddy who was a 5star and the #2 PG behind John Wall who was....well, I'll just say not good. You also have Durant-lite basically eating up a roster spot for 4 years, Kemp had 1 semi-decent season out of 4, now we have Quevyn Winters who can't even get minutes as an upperclassman on a terrible team and sucked royally when forced to play. That's without even mentioning Saint Romar literally taking NOBODY in 2012, multiple low character guys Romar gambled on and either never enrolled in school or couldn't kick an MDMA "habit" (Chuck Garcia, McLaughlin, Upshaw, Etienne)
Which is just crazy to me how many fucking whiffs there were after the somewhat unheralded but money 2007 class of IT, Overton, Gant, Holiday, Bryan-Amaning...who right there would be a solid starting 5. 2 NBA guys, a P12 defensive player of the year candidate and pretty good college PG in Overton, a solid but limited big (Gant) and an all Pac12, athletic 4/5 in MBA who is playing upper level Euro pro ball and if not slightly undersized probably could have sniffed the NBA as well.
The absolute dreckfest that is Dierxczcxxx and his
pending transfercouch being put up for sale got me to type out loud about his fellow Four Horsemen dreckmates that Romar has signed recently. and in turn attempting to justify why they've been such an abortion these past 3+ years. And in typing all this out, having this list of just absolute, unequivocal shittiness right in front of me, I keep coming back to 2 main thoughts. #1, I obviously know the teams have been bad and and there have been a lot of mistakes, but without seeing all the names in front of me at one time, I never truly grasped actually how fucking bad. And frankly, it's shocking just how many terrible players have come through and are still in the program (but how is it Romar's fault they miss so many free throws? Is Romar the one who can't execute an inbounds play? Is it Romar who isn't hustling back on defense? Is Romar committing all those turnovers? Did Romar make Chuck Garcia fail his classes...or get Upshaw addicted to dropping E? And if you're so smart, who should we hire that's better? The 3 coaches before Romar were also shitty coaches....so 2+2=5 says that we'll never have a consistent winner anyway. Plus we're in Seattle. Who would want to move to Seattle if they could live in Dayton, or Wichita, or Omaha? Who would actually want to come here? Huh? That's what I thought). Which leads me to #2, how in the hell does the Passion of the Romar still have a job?But I guess I'm losing sight of the big picture. We have a coach who is a great guy and well-respected in the community so none of that matters. In Romar we trust!
