If Oklahoma had won they would have beat BYU in the poll. Football News gave us our due though. Before that Orange Bowl it was widely acknowledged as the championship game

After the 1991 Rose Bowl, Frank Deford and his ill fated "National" magazine ran a 16 team fantasy college football tourney, and UW beat FSU for the title. So I count that as the actual first real title, since the two teams settled it with a playoff and such.
