Seattle is a pretty nice city. Eugene is a "meh" college town. Neither is close to the worst place I have lived (hello, Killeen!) but both have warts as well.

This. I can at least speak for Texas when I say that the Pacific Northwest is a myth there. The only reason I knew where UW was was because I had an uncle that worked for Microsoft. When I was home in Houston and told people where I was attending college they always replied how much they loved St Louis. One thing to go from Tampa to LA and play for an iconic program. Quite another to come up to dreary seattle. The "quality of life" shit plays with 25 year old computer science types but not elite fb recruits. Generalizing of course but I think something's there.
