I have only been to Guantanamo which is no indication of what Cuba is like but my buddy and his wife thought it would be neat to go when BO removed the restrictions so that American dollars could help the communist country survive. They were sorry they did. Said it will take decades and trillions to bring that country back.

I've never been, but I've never spoken to anyone who has to regretted going. I was in Eastern Europe last summer and, while likely not in Cuba's state, there are parts of even the Baltics that would not feel normal to a US tourist; even in places like Vilnius and Riga, you feel it. Still, I didn't regret going. But of course, serious capital investment into everything from infrastructure to services is needed to bring Cuba current to Bahamas-level of comfort. It may take decades to get the whole country on-line because there is A LOT of rural in Cuba and it's a fairly large country. But capital investment into the big cities would yield a return in much less time.

The infrastructure is in shambles. The poverty is 3rd world. My friends thought the poverty and insane decay of all infrastructure and once beautiful structures/buildings was very depressing. Unless other countries invest trillions in Cuba and free country citizens move there by the millions, there will be no money or expertise at how to fix the problem. I don't want my tax dollars going down that black hole which will undoubtedly be rife with 3rd world corruption. This has been tried in countries in Africa, Haiti, Puerto Rico, etc. and it is a long 100 year haul if successful at all.
