The leadership is smart enough not to say the quiet part out loud. The trouble is their base is out in front proclaiming it loudly for them. "We killed him and he deserved it!"
I can go on Facebook right now and find hundreds of posts to this effect in just my circle here in California. Tough to quiet that with some bots and influencers online.
