Dallas Netflix Series

Watching it. Has given me a new appreciation for Barry Switzer. He took a lot of shit for following Johnson and coaching the team another guy built to a SB win. Also didn't realize how intense Aikman was as a team leader and how much he and Switzer feuded. Woulda thought that Aikman was easy going (always seems like that kind of guy) and that his history with Switzer, whom he knew from his time as a recruited kid growing up in Oklahoma, would have made them close. But as much as any player he missed and wanted Johnson's coaching style.

Goes to show again that multiple styles can work. One end of the spectrum you have the hard asses like Saban, Meyer, Johnson and on the other you have guys like Pete Carroll and Barry Swizter.

Also didn't know the personal story behind Switzer's family life. Pretty rough.

Also didn't know he was a coach at Arkansas when Johnson and Jones were players there. Would have guessed he was younger than those dudes.

Also came away with a bit more of an appreciation for Jerry Jones. His deal with Johnson, who is a complicated dude, had more nuance to it than I previously appreciated.

It's a bit corny and the music scores intended to create dramatic crescendos throughout were a bit uninspired. But still … I love a good sports miniseries.

Great player, great teammate and role model for younger guys in that he was legendary for how hard he worked. Courageous guy who ran the unpopular routes (lots of slants), money in the clutch, and a guy who went to war for his guys.

You can see in the series how much regard and esteem Aikman, Johnson and Jones have for him.

It's a shame that all that ever comes up is the coke and partying when half the players in the league did/do that shit. He got busted and a county prosecutor wanted his head for a trophy. It's too bad. He was not a problem at Miami. Just a guy who lived a little too big once he got his money.

But the "coked up Irvin" meme because he was jacked at the Miami game is rather unfortunate. He's been a consistent and visible supporter of Miami through a lot of downs. Unlike USC, whose stars stop showing up when they suck, Irvin (and Reed a few other guys) never stopped coming back to their alma mater. It's one of the things that, I believe, sets Miami apart.

Fun fact: Irvin averaged over 20 yards per catch his rookie year when Dallas won 3 games and was catching passes not from Troy Aikman but from our? own Steve Pelluer, who is one of the real good guys in sports.

Barry Switzer is one of the greatest college coaches of all time and showed he could win a Super Bowl in the NFL even though he was made for college. He was real which is why he was the top recruiter in the game

Unfairly maligned by the stuffed shirt assholes he beat on the regular - hi Darrell Royal - and denied his place along side The Bear and Woody. He beat Woody at Columbus by the way

Better than Bo and the rest.

What you’re saying about Irvin as a teammate reminds me of something I heard Mark Schlereth say once. Probably around the time of the Dolphins bullying incident or even earlier. Said he played with another OL who was the most racist guy he’s ever met but he was the best teammate and a great locker room guy.

In some ways beating Oklahoma and Barry in the Orange Bowl was the biggest and favorite win of my fan career. 1991 was awesome but everyone knew Michigan had no shot. The Sugar Bowl was lit.

Had they closed it out against Harbrain we'd have a battle for the top

Well, they don't play Georgia-Tech this year, so that is some reason for optimism. OTOH, they still have to play mighty Syracuse, so my premature enthusiasm will be stamped out in good time.

In all seriousness, it looks like Florida State may be in the way this year.

Yeah, but I still don't think '23 would compare. '23 Washington wasn't anywhere nearly as dominant and '91 had that fun defense that made one's fandom boner stand up hard all the tim. I also don't think '23 Michigan is any kind of all-time great team and not at all comparable to an 80s era Switzer team. His teams were nails back in the day. You and I and a handful of other dudes here know what I'm talkin' about. The young bucks here are like, "WTF are you talking about creep?"
