As a vet that gets his health care at the La Jolla VA, in my experience the foreign nurses especially ones not born on US soil are the best. The white nurses I have seen both male and female have little compassion and I would say many actually dislike veterans. I’m not only speaking for myself but when I observe other interactions during my appointments.
The best nurses I have encountered at the La Jolla VA the past decade are easily from SE Asia. Last year, I had this caucasian nurse assisting me in her mid 30s and once my appointment was finished I flat out asked her in front others “Is it your job you hate or is it veteran’s or a combination?”
I haven’t had but a few bad experiences over the years with the VA so I rarely complain. I typically ask the nurse I’m speaking with when I believe they might be dual citizenship mostly because I’m curious when I hear a faint accent.
My recent experience is the worst nurses in general where I visit are mostly white and entitled while not appreciative of where they grew up. The nurses born elsewhere and now US citizens appreciate veterans much more and show much greater respect to their patients.
Have any veteran’s here had a similar experience within the VA? I understand the VA gets negative press mostly but this hasn’t been my experience until more recently for myself. I’m grateful for the VA but I have noticed many more bad apples the last 5-10 years. Appoligizes in advance:/

When I was in Kootenai for a week my white nurses were pretty good...
Had a mixed dude overnight that tried to kill me... I guess he was a travel nurse…but he was bad... pushed my antibiotics vs taking 5 minutes etc... luckily I was fine... he also didn't do the right labs and cost me about 10 hours of staying in the hospital until the redid them. The next nurse was pissed when I told her about the antibiotics.... and she did a report on him.
