on the first play, Bandes literally doesn't move. The OL chip blocks him and Bandes is too slow to even realize he's been abandoned. RB runs right into his arms.
The film guys are getting a little overzealous. My favorite is during games now hyping up OL on one yard runs (and in general) where it's schemed up to give them a massive advantage and they just don't fuck it up.
There's another clip of Johnson running for a 40+ yard TD where he comments that Bruener was trying to make up for at least 4 players completing fucking up their assignments on the play.
Still ridiculous how badly we got beat and then Iowa loses like both starting and backup quarterbacks and a few other players on offense and now all the sudden they can't even beat UCLA.
I thought our scheme against power running teams wasn't very good. Part of that was probably due a lack of depth and talent on the DL but it would have been nice to see 3 DTs at times. Sometimes I got the feeling that Stevie B. was like Jimmy Fake in that he was more concerned about having a top ranked passing D than stopping the run first.
Yeah that feels like the opposite of what we should have been doing. The funny thing is that the games we got crushed in, it feels like their quarterbacks were hitting 3rd/4th down short slants with such regularity that whatever passing rank we ended with feels dishonest. Rutgers did it to us as well. Cuog had a different route but the same idea. Too much sitting back and giving up an easy first down.
We stopped USC and UCLA from throwing downfield on us though. Good job little Steve.
