As we celebrate the birth of college football 20 years ago this week I am struck by some similarities to the birth of modern Husky football in 1977.

The legend is well known about how Don James in his third year was 1-3 and in hot water. Two of the losses were to Minnesota and Syracuse, not quite as bad as Oregon losing to Utah and Hawaii in 1994, but bad enough that James moved into his office to try to turn things around for the start of Pac 8 play.

Oregon was first and they went down 54-0 to start a 6-1 campaign that culminated in a Rose Bowl win, but Husky fans do not look to that game as anything more than the first win. The legend win was USC in November at Husky Stadium. John McKay was gone and James beat him in his final year, 1975, at Husky Stadium to break a 10 year losing streak, but USC was USC then. The road to the Rose Bowl went through them. UW had lost to UCLA 31-0, so it was a must win game.

The signature Kenny Wheaton play was Warren Moon rolling around the end for an 80 yard jaunt to clinch the game. If we had jumbotrons back then that would be the play you saw every week if we were fucking stupid like Oregon. But we're not. Not until Todd Turner. Another story there.

That game and that season did herald the arrival of Washington as a west coast power with national aspirations as James did go .500 against USC when that meant something. Don James told his assistants to go after USC recruits the same way Bill Moos told Oregon to be like Washington

As Oregon celebrates their origin story this week, Washington is still recovering from their Apocalyptic Story, as the Mayan Calender finally struck midnight in 2008, not 2012. UW will need another origin story for the next era that has hopefully began under Petermen. Now it is Oregon, not USC that stands in the way. It is Oregon that we are going after the same way they came after us.

The most frustrating thing over the past 20 years has been the way that UW refused to fight. Academic smack and bull shit about winning the right way are for losers and we have had a shitload of losers over the last two decades.

It feels like now we are ready to fight and if it took a couple coffee cups full of cash to get some players here for Petermen to build on then so be it. One win can define and turn a program around. Who cares if Oregon can maintain or not. What matters is if Washington is serious about football again and getting it done on the field.

It doesn't have to be this week, but it would be pretty fucking cool you have to admit.
