THE MORNING RANT: New Transportation Secretary Issues Order Directing NHTSA to Rescind and Replace Existing Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards
—Buck Throckmorton
The all-fronts assault by the Trump administration against the entrenched bureaucracy continues, as the nation’s duly elected Chief Executive seeks to wrest control of our government from the unelected cabal that has been running this country through regulatory diktat.
Buried amidst all the headlines and Executive Orders this past week was a major announcement that is decades overdue. The first act of the newly sworn-in Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, was an order for his department to rescind or replace all existing automotive Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.
The CAFE regulations have been a destructive, market-distorting imposition on the auto industry, with various unintended consequences, from pushing consumers out of wagons and into SUVs, to killing off small pickup trucks. The intent of CAFÉ, of course, was initially to deny consumers the right to drive anything but tiny econo-boxes, and it has morphed into an effort to push consumers into EVs.
“US DoT issues order to “rescind or replace” CAFE standards” [Automotive News – 01/30/2025]
As expected, US regulators are moving to roll back fuel economy standards on new vehicles following Trump’s assumption of office.
[Duffy’s] first official act was to sign a memorandum directing staff to start the process of resetting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. It specifically directs the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of the Undersecretary for Policy, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to immediately initiate rulemaking “to rescind or replace all existing CAFE standards.”
The rules currently in place require a 2% improvement in fuel economy every year for all passenger cars and light trucks between model years (MY) 2027 and 2031. By MY2031, the final standard would require 50.4mpg.

Makes you proud to be an Oregonian. Dems are screaming about an education budget deficit. Plenty of money for criminal trannies for hair transplants, laser hair removal and breast implants but a shortage of dough for the
teacher unionsuh, kiddies. Seems like a nice It. Triple murderer, rapist and arsonist with attempted murder. He's sorry and deserves Newsweek's sympathy.https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2025/02/living-the-trans-life-in-prison.php
Living the Trans Life In PrisonI remember this case, because it was so horrible: in July 2007, Steven Hayes and a younger accomplice invaded the Connecticut home of Dr. William Petit in Connecticut. They held the family prisoners for hours, after tying up Dr. Petit and beating him with a baseball bat. Hayes forced Petit’s wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to withdraw $15,000 in cash from an ATM. He brought her back to the house, where he raped her and then strangled her to death. Hayes’s confederate raped the Petits’ 11-year-old daughter. Hayes tied the Petits’ two daughters–the other daughter was 17–to their beds and doused them and the house with gasoline. They had already tied up and beaten the father, and the mother was already dead. The two daughters died in the fire; only Dr. Petit survived.
Steven Hayes was tried, convicted and sentenced to death. His sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment. But the story has a happy ending! Newsweek reports that the rapist and murderer Steven Hayes has now found happiness as a woman. The Newsweek story goes on just about forever, but here are a few lowlights:
Nearly 18 years after killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two young daughters during a home invasion in Connecticut, the murderer formerly known as Steven Joseph Hayes says she’s now at peace — though still haunted by the killings she regrets.
Newsweek dutifully refers to Hayes as “she,” and uses Hayes’s new name, Linda Mai Lee.
“For the first time in my life I am happy to be alive and do not want to die,” Lee told Newsweek via email on Jan. 15, adding she intends to resume hormone replacement therapy shortly.
The vast majority of inmates in Oregon State Penitentiary are men, but Lee said she is able to wear makeup, eye shadow, foundation, eyeliner and even lipstick on occasion. She also cherishes her jewelry, including rings and necklaces, as well as bras, panties and what she called a “slightly feminized” uniform. That had eliminated her thoughts of suicide. She’s now seeking breast augmentation and hair replacement therapy since male pattern baldness drastically enhances her gender dysphoria.
All at taxpayer expense. Hayes started out in the prison system in Pennsylvania, but was transferred to Oregon for reasons that are not clear. He is suing the state of Pennsylvania:
Lee praised prison staff in Oregon, characterizing her treatment as “amazing by comparison” to Pennsylvania, where an ongoing civil rights lawsuit filed in late 2022 alleges she was denied treatment for male pattern baldness and face/body hair removal.
That could stand as an epitaph for our times: “she was denied treatment for male pattern baldness.”
There is much more at the link, all of it nauseating. Newsweek considers this to be a feel-good story that demonstrates how important it is for taxpayers to fund “gender affirming” care for people who claim to be “trans.” The article includes this, which seems jarring:
According to research by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, transgender people are over four times more likely than others to be victims of violent crime.
Of course, the problem in this case was not violence against Steven Hayes. On the contrary.
Recalling his multiple rapes and murders, Hayes trots out a favorite liberal nostrum:
[T]hat is not who I am as a person… What happened goes against everything I believe and will haunt me forever. What makes it worse is knowing that I would never have been in that situation if I had accepted who I am sooner.

Here is the truth this ghetto trash race baiter doesn't want you to know.

Dems are now afraid of a shadow government. So, let's review. No one know who really was president for four years as the dementia patient pretended to be president. We all have a pretty good idea, but absolutely no transparency, the MSM and all the dem politicians and White House administration lied about the mentis compos of the dementia patient and someone, not the president was approving regulations, signing bills and pardons.
Now, we have DOGE. When was the last time we saw something this transparent? The dems are screaming because their sacred grifting cows are being exposed. Congress authorizes a bulk award to USAID and they can spend it as the President authorizes as he delegates his authority to the USAID. Now that is democracy. When the President after authorizing DOGE to investigate that actual spending awards says they can't spend the money because he has unauthorized it, that's the death of democracy. I've seen no defense of the actual spending going to NGOs or governments and how that helps Americans. Just whining and lying.

It’s difficult to keep up on things the new administration is doing but hopefully the DOJ is next to investigate if this has merit.
