I really remember everyone, me included, thinking USC was going to be BACK with Riley, especially since he was bringing Caleb Williams with him and that Pitt WR. It really feels like he's dead though already and was coasting off taking over Stoops' operation and playing in a conference where no one had a defense. Time to thaw out Pete Carroll.
Uh, not everyone. I don't see a lot of things coming, but his "no defense" M/O did not look like a good fit at USC. I thought he'd come to the Pac and tell himself, "great! I don't need to play defense out there."
Candidly, they're actually better than I thought they'd be under him.
It would take me a while, but I could find my posts arguing that it was insane for them to pay a coach that's never put a functional defense on the field that much money.
If USC was smart and had relative faith in Riley, just go pay $5 million a year to Robert Saleh and hand him total control over the defense. (Assuming that Riley's ego could withstand that).
I was a big Riley hater but he made the right offseason moves that he needed to (Lynn and the ndsu coach especially). Problem is, he had neglected the lines for his first 2 years and that doesn’t get fixed in one offseason. It’ll take them another year or two to be competitive up front but I do think they’re on the right track
This makes for an interesting discussion as to whether USC should have hired James Franklin instead. He was supposedly on the list and has never denied rumors about it, and after USC hired Riley, Franklin got his own big contract extension.
One recruits talent basically everywhere (except QB) but under performs with it. The other recruits the best QBs but can't be bothered with D and OLine, but gets average talent there by accident and sucks at developing it.
My unknown with programs like USC and Alabama hiring high flying offense guys is (at least in the Pac-12) USC and Alabama are teams that have and should win by being able to stack the guys up front the other programs have a harder time getting and then loading up on good RBs. I do think that's a lot harder for USC to do though with blue bloods out of region now raiding California.

Thanks Taft!
"Think about this: What do Billy Napier (Florida), Sonny Dykes (TCU), Sam Pittman (Arkansas), Hugh Freeze (Auburn) and Riley have in common?
They’ve all lost seven of their last 12 games."
Ouch!
I didn’t know his offense was famous. I haven’t seen them participate in any Subway commercials this year.

USC offense isn't even good. Riley is turning out to be a poor man's KKKliff KKKingsbury.

I think I'm on record here with this hot take.
USC was the best offense UW played last year and Williams the best qb

UW just had a down game IMO. Should have blown out Trooj.

Their defense ain’t the issue this season.

Franklin could probably scrape up a qb in so cal
I like to call it so cal
Penn State and Michigan shop at the same qb store.
Ohio States best qb recently was from Rancho Cucamonga and is letting it rip in the NFL

Yeah he is. That kid is the best QB I've seen do it in college in a long, long time.
Riley sucks. Another choke job happening now. I think Fisch would have a better record than Riley if at USC.
USC got hosed
Unlike UW, USC can't even point to coaching staff turnover and massive roster change. Riley is in his 3rd season there and he owns it all.
usc hosed themselves being up 14 and then fucking up.
