The 80s were the nadir of the genre. @RaceBannon has pointed out previously, Pale Rider, helped keep the genre on life support until the 90's resurgence.
Even though I'd concede the GOAT Western Actor Natty to Clint of The Duke, Robert Duvall remains my favorite guy in a Western.
People forget Lonseome Dove was originally written as a movie screen play in 1971 with John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Henry Fonda in the starring roles.

The Man from Snowy River
Dad #2 loved Snowy River and the VHS was worn from heavy use from the basement family room. Pretty excellent movie score as well. I scored many a points when I was able to secure a DVD for his viewing pleasure.

Pale Rider
Pale Rider isn't even among his best westerns, but it's still a great movie. There was a little too much cheese but it's easily forgivable. Clint really leaned into the kindly but mysterious stranger with a dark side thing and that's his wheelhouse.

There’s some pics on IMDb of Lori Singer in a cowboy hat in footloose.
You’re damned right on the Utah armpit action.
