He got lucky starting out. That's how anyone becomes a huge movie star. You need a certain amount of luck, and he got it by starring in good movies when he was young. The Outsiders, Risky Business, and Top Gun are all pretty good movies. Once you have a string of hits, you have it made for awhile. Cruise has never had enough clunkers to go away. He may be a whacky guy, but he is very reliable as well. The reason he is still a star is his overseas box office appeal, which is the single most important thing when determining movie stars. If your movies make money overseas, the studios will keep running you out there. They all still love him there and don't care about him being a whack job like many Americans. A lot of actors aren't very fond on traveling all over to promote their movies, but Cruise seems to love it.

The Federal Reserve & the end of the Gold Standard has served to loot and destroy the middle class, the wage-earner and gradually transfer money and wealth (through the income tax and inflation) to the elites. It transformed this country from one that produces, saves and invests to one that borrows and consumes.
The reality is the free market with free banking and sound money was the system that this country flourished under for nearly 200 years. We don't have that today and haven't had that in a long time.
Sure we have lots of nice gadgets today (who gives a fuck about a stupid app) but overall living standards and quality of life should have improved much more and much faster than what we've experienced in the last several decades. -

Legislation like the patriot act is always sitting waiting on the next national disaster;
Gun activists already have legislation ready for the next time some crazy guy shoots a bunch of white people
Civil rights activists have legislation ready for the next time a white Hispanic shoots a black guy
Environmental activists have legislation ready for the next time an oil well leaks in the gulf
Its fucking politics, if you want to get a "comprehensive" law passed you cant let a good tragedy go to waste, you have to push shit through when everyone is outraged, remorseful, panicked, or thinking of children! There isn't time to write a wide sweeping law after the fact. These things are always written by people who are just patiently waiting for the perfect time to press their agenda at the perfect time.
