Dillion Johnson looks really

I wasn't big on Johnson as a runner based on his Miss St footage. I saw an average back that had good hands.
Nixon has a burst but he's like the Beavs Damien Martinez ... in that you can't give him the rock 20+ a game all season like you would with a War Daddy.
I'm interested in seeing Tybo and more Newton. Week 1 had a lot of bad fumbles (Looking at you Nebraska) so lets phase Tybo during game that's not so critical.
What I do like about Nixon and Johnson is their pass catching and I think that's a talent we need. If they load the box and don't account for the RB in space I have confidence that both will catch the pigskin with regularity.

Yeah, defense looked way worse last year in the opener. Shitty angles and sloppy tackling. They got better as the season went on.godawgst said:
Corner play was surprise highlight of day today. Guys were on receivers and getting hands in way. Dom and Asa are who we thought they were as Safeties. LB's are jags. DT's will be able to do what's asked of them.Kingdome_Urinals said:

At RB they really need somebody who can make the necessary short yards. Cam Davis scored a lot of TDs last year in that role.
Edge play was not good to put it mildly, and running game between tackles was abysmal just as it was most of last year.
I saw a lot less of that this year. They looked like the equivalent of week 6 or so last year. Corners made some real plays.
LB's were forgettable.
Defensive line was playing contain all day so hard to judge. Hopefully they'll look a lot better against Tulsa. If they don't then I'll start to worry.
Atbs Penix is amazing. The defense only needs to be opportunistic not great. -
Couple turnovers and not giving up 90% 3rd down conversions makes all the difference.UW_Doog_Bot said:

With the new clock rules they have to find a way to get off the field during conference play in the same way they did yesterday. A lot of that was bailed out by bad receivers/drops but we were forcing their QB to get the ball out quick. -
Some of that was also the receivers hearing footsteps after a few good hits. Nothing like the Perermen D but good enough for effect.haie said:

The db's rarely put their hands on balls at all last year. Yesterday was way better. Many TD's didn't even have the db's show up in the screen.haie said:

Expecting to never have a game like ASU/UCLA is somewhat reasonable.
Otherwise get rid of Morrell and possibly Inge.
Although it's still fresh in my mind that they held Texas to a field goal on the road. Muhammad is a god send. We are fucked without him. -
Johnson's debut reminded me a lot of Giles Jackson's where Jackson was supposed to be a fast guy then looked slower than Montana LBs on kickoffs. The RBs overall looked really good at getting tackled.
-
Dillon Johnson was seen as a big back that had good hands. He didn’t look good, but I really wasn’t expecting much. The coaches said Cam Davis was clearly #1 and it’s not like Cam Davis is a star.
-
The thing is, if you bring in a RB for a play... that the opposition knows is only good at running, then you've just given away your play call. See how that works?NeGgaPlEaSe said:
Fuck that. Corey Dillion was not the greatest receiver unless he was wide open. Pass pro decent. Give Newton the ball up the middle. It really won’t take away from Grubb’s passing game to feed dick the ball 5 times a game and will keep the defense honest. It was criminal underuse of a man playing among boys.HairyBallsDawg said:

They have not found a rb worth anything at uw since Ahmed and that's being generous as he was not special, but at least had some specific talents. (I happen to think he's was misused). That was 6 or 7 recruiting cycles ago. This is pathetic.RoadDawg55 said:Dillon Johnson was seen as a big back that had good hands. He didn’t look good, but I really wasn’t expecting much. Why do you hate Taulupapa? He had 1112 yards from scrimmage last year (only behind Odunze and ahead of McMillian) and was 2nd for TDs, only behind Davis.AtomicDawg said:

I'd rather have Towelpopper but he's definitely the floor of a good RB. He did his job for Deboers offense though so I'm not sure how to balance thatwhatshouldicareabout said:

Papa was the bare minimum for a starting FBS RB in that he could get what was blocked for him, but not create anything on his own. This year we don't even have that.whatshouldicareabout said:

Because he was not good. There is a reason he is not making an nfl roster. Worthless in short yardage. Doesn't make anyone miss. He was just the best we had. Not his fault. Nothing against the guy but we should have players that are pushing for all conference at that position.whatshouldicareabout said:

It's going to be pretty fucking disappointing if they end up missing on Jason Brown... to Michigan State no less.
-
Maybe Dillon had been dinged up and they weren’t planning to play him much right away…until Cam got hurt🤔
That being said, play Nixon until Tybo (the future?) takes over🤷♂️ -
Jason Brown is not a difference maker. If he was he would be highly recruited.BroadcastingDawg said:It's going to be pretty fucking disappointing if they end up missing on Jason Brown... to Michigan State no less.

Myles Gaskin was a 3-star recruit who had offers from WSU and UW.AtomicDawg said:

Don't want to compare the 2... but if those are the parameters. -

End of the year Papa was a badass who made Texas defenders look like they were swimming in molasses. Dude was a baller.
He had some bad games at the beginning of the year though, don't twist. I wanted him tarmaced after the UCLA game. -
The endless debate about who has been the best or could be productive just illustrates why I'm not worried at all. This offense will spoon-feed production for a couple of the guys we have. Papa was not a big time talent and was productive as fuck in this offense. Cam Davis was too. I think there are 4-5 guys on the roster who can match what they did.
I'd still rather have Gaskin or Sankey at UW now. Don't twist. Either of those guys would be unfair. -
He is highly rated but nobody seems to care and rightfully so. Comment was in reference to that (5 star recruit with minimal interest from anyone of note including uw). Uw went hard after rb's that are ranked way lower than him and were told no thanks. They evaluated other guys much higher and here we are.BroadcastingDawg said:

They were always going hard after Gaskin because they wanted him regardless of ranking or interest from other schools. Just like they went hard after Tybo from the beginning. -
I hope he gets ungrounded soon so we can see what we have in him.AtomicDawg said:

They have over a month to figure it out.
End of the day Penix and his two receivers have to get it done anyways. Running game can't overcome a bunch of picks no matter what.
Taulapapa had two great games last year and no one ever gets credit for beating up on the cuog. -
early returns are alarming but i honestly can't even remember the last time our RBs started a season strong, not even during the gaskin years lol
2016 week 1: https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/400869097
2017 week 1: https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/400935250
we have god tier offensive coaches. i'll let this one play out for now. hopefully nixon or tybo or someone proves they're clearly the guy, like freshman gaskin did vs usc in 2015.
edit: lmao @ how awful those uniforms were -
I bet Nixon ends up with over half the touches this year. Deboer gushed about him all summer and then he looked like the best RB in game one

Is it an indictment against Pete’s offense to only gain 380 and 368 total yards against Rutgers?Gladstone said:early returns are alarming but i honestly can't even remember the last time our RBs started a season strong, not even during the gaskin years lol
