Washington is a men’s track & field school . . . 1st Track & Field Conference Championship since 1960. UW’s Head Coach for T&F and Cross Country and UW’s Director of T&F and Cross Country were previously assistants at Oregon.

    Terrific hires, Jen.

Taking Oregon's assistants and then kicking their ass with them is actually a pretty awesome way to be a T&F school.

I'm going to guess neither of you two listened to the interview afterwards:

"We have a lot of athletes who are on a partial scholarship because they favor UW's academics and want to be a part of this University"

I mean what more shiny shit can Phil even build at this point? We just have a little purple track on top of a old garbage dump site.

Virtually, every.men’s T&F program gives out partial scholarships, at best.

Andy and Maurica Powell (husband and wife) ran and coached at Stanford under Vin, who brought them to Oregon when he took the head coaching position at Oregon.

They were passed over for the head coaching job in favor of Robert Johnson, so they moved on. Johnson was removed as head coach from Oregon in June of 2022, when his contract expired despite the fact Oregon had won 15 consecutive men’s conference championships. He most likely was removed for precisely the same reason Washington’s previous head T&F coach was dismissed.

Andy and Maurica Powell were outstanding distance runners at Stanford and were proven developers of world class runners at Stanford and Oregon.

Distance runners are going to Washington because of the distance coaches, despite what the Powell’s say. Academics are a selling point, but partial scholarships are the norm in men’s track & field/cross country.

I thought Colorado had the market cornered on distance runners?

In depends what period of time you’re talking about . . . Whether you’re talking PAC-12 only.

Stanford, Oregon and Colorado have been the dominant distance programs in the PAC-10/PAC-12 in this century. They all have to deal with limited track scholarships, i.e., particularly on the men’s side, necessitating the use of partial scholarships and walk-ons.

No program has the “market cornered” as far as distance runners.

Washington is currently in the driver’s seat for distance runners as far as coaching.
