If the counteroffensive is surprisingly successful, Putin will be forced to respond in one of two ways—negotiation or escalation. Then, the big nuclear strike scenario. Russia nukes Kyiv, Kherson, Odessa, etc. They finally get that evil Jewish Nazi (el oh el) whos been beating Putin's ass as a leader and tactician. This would draw NATO into the conflict and would be the end of Russia as we know it. It would not be pretty and nukes would fly on both sides.

Russia does not want that scenario. Plenty of oligarchs and FSBs types that want to rule a Russia who got humbled by Ukraine, not a smoldering corpse, would not let this happen. I dont think anyone would obey the commands to launch nukes. I think this has 0% chance of happening.

Real world he starts small with tactical nukes. He is already a world pariah and that doesn't seem to bother him. US threatens to retaliate with tactical nukes. Putin tells the dementia patient and his commie advisors that if Russian troops are killed with US nukes he is going to take out the big US base in Ramstein, Germany. US troops for the tens of thousands of Russian troops killed with US and NATO weapons. Then what? Further escalation for some dead US troops in Germany while the US is still safe? Seems like a negotiated settlement would be the sane thing to have done a year ago.
