She wanted to keep him because she is nothing more than a bean counter at heart. She gets out of the way of the people she hires, but doesn’t bring anything else to the table. If we take the pressers at face value, sure. I find it hard to believe that contingency plans weren't being desperately worked out behind the scenes while publicly supporting the then-coach to the press in case you're stuck with him. She was probably trying to scrape together the money and hedging bets in the meantime.
