Mississippi State's new HC Zach Arnett knows he can't replace Mike Leach

Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett knows he's going to have a hard time replacing the late Mike Leach for the Bulldogs, let alone in the pantheon of college sports.

Leach tragically died in December 2022 at just 61 years old due to heart-related complications. Arnett, Leach's defensive coordinator at Mississippi State since 2020, took over to lead the Bulldogs to a 19-10 win over Illinois in the ReliaQuest Bowl and is now going into his first season as a head coach at 36 years old.

He knows he has big shoes to fill. So much so that he's wise enough to not even try to become another Leach. There was only one pirate of college football.

"Who's going to duplicate Mike Leach?" Arnett said on Monday, via ESPN's Alex Scarborough. "There's no chance in hell."

Leach was known for his quirky personality and legendary quotes, but behind all that was one of the architects of modern-day football. He was an early adopter and innovator of the "Air Raid" offense, and all of his teams came to take on that high-flying and exciting attitude. Leach coached at Texas Tech (2000-2009), Washington State (2012-2019) and Mississippi State (2020-2022).

Not only will Arnett not look to replace Leach the person, but he's going to go his own way as a head coach as well. In fact, he's already tweaking Mississippi State's offense.

"We're not running the pure Air Raid that we ran then," Arnett said. "And I don't think [Leach] would necessarily have a problem with that because he would want me to run a program that's in the vision that I see as best fit for its future."

The Bulldogs' entire offensive staff is new, and Arnett is a defensive-minded coach. Notably, former Appalachian State and Central Michigan offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay is the new man in charge of the offense. His offense, per ESPN, will be focused more on the vertical passing game and traditional run concepts.

Some of the main concepts of the Air Raid include horizontal and crossing patterns as well as screens, large splits from offensive linemen, and one running back sets to go along with a no-huddle offense.

Mississippi State would be lucky to win 4 games in the Pac12!

MS ST would own the PAC. Maybe minus one team, annually. And that would be the PAC Champ. Maybe 2nd team…

The PAC 12 Champ wouldn’t even sniff the SEC Champ and would get beat in a regular season by teams out of the SEC that would y’all would think is significant, and wouldn’t be relevant by the end of it all.

It’s like this. A PAC 12 team now runs their “gauntlet” ..unlike an SEC Gauntlet…and “makes” it to the show… then gets hammered, unmerciful by the SEC Champ. Like most teams.

It’s like that and it will be. Forever.

    Don’t shit on MS St.

Play em and pop off. Yalls Zona guysms last year did and gave a chance to do it…failed miserably….they and yalll have a chance this year in Starkvegas this year. See how that goes and pop off…

Play the SEC champ and pop off.

    I’d bet it won’t end well…

    Moral? Pop the fk off…

    Well, started some shit.

    Guess that’s good.

Someone mentioned Washington leads all time Series with MS St. That’s actually good, nothing to really hang a hat on, but good. There really is not a lot of teams that can say, “hey, we hold an all time series against this particular school in the SEC”…

OU is trying that shit now with GA and OLe Miss on the boards..guess what.. you guessed it. Ain’t working out well…

TX actually has a lot of history and pompous history with Bama, GA, SEC teams..that shit is about to do a 180 but they can talk shit. OU? Not so much.

However, back to Washington..what’s the history with them and the SEC:

We can go all way back to a Rose Bowel wit Bama, where Bama rode a fucking train, unloading along the way to practice in desolate fields before they got there..they were unworthy. They were Lemons, not a Rose.

Snippet; All you West Coast eggheads need to watch this clip. It will make sense, from y’all, to us.. we all all together but at one time, we weren’t. Football is a religion in the South. Yes, I’m not a Bama fan but that is the very team that I found y’all form when WA was once again playing them, in a playoff game. Not because I’m a Bama fan but an SEC fan, MS ST. GA, even Bama.. we stick together and maybe this vid may make a little sense. Or maybe not.

    Swimming in what?

What’s Washington record against the SEC?

Bama beat Washington in a bowl on 1926 that started the help the South needed to be recognized as a entity. A group. Bama.

    Swimming what?
