NBA doesn't want more colder climate cities. Free agents don't want to play there. Harder to maintain parity in a league that already struggles for it as is. -
We all knw that The thunder would wind up on the bottom and that no-one would care about the franchise... no surprise at all. It was worth it to the NBA at the time though, that's really all that mattered.

While this makes my day and I agree that Stern was a piece of shit, we also have to acknowledge what it must have been like for him to deal with the Seattle City Council.Purple_Pills said:http://www.espn.com/nba/attendance

NBA just wants one franchise in the NW and Blazers are an old enough brand to leave where they are. They get Oregon and Washington State residents into them.
NBA doesn't like competing with all those other brands in Seattle. They'd rather have a new team in Vegas. -

If the league expands it's not going to have an odd-number. It will be Seattle and Vegas. They "compete" with all the other major sports in many other markets. -
Also, the NBA has a ratings problem.
https://deadspin.com/nba-tv-ratings-all-star-game-tnt-salt-lake-city-1850149749According to Sportico, NFL games accounted for 82 of the 100 most-watched U.S. broadcasts in 2022. Thatโs seven more than last year when the 2021 mark was 75 out of 100. College football had five of the top 100, political programming had four, the World Cup had three, and college basketball had two.
Do you want to know how many the NBA had?
ZERO! -

Seattle set all kinds of attendance records with the Sonics.
We will be sure to let Portland keep their name and history when the team relocates to Seattle.
Donโt worry, Ja Morant Trail Blazers II is on your way. Or New Orleans. Or OKCโฆ
Either way, two teams plus will be in the NW. -

The ๐น Garden is just south of the Columbia river for a reason.
It would have been much easier to build the new arena well outside of Portland. -
New? That building was built nearly 30 years ago. Basically all arenas are built in cities, not outside of them. The NBA is not the NFL. It's cited where it is because that's where the city is located.
I remember KJR carrying Blazers games after the Sonics left. That lasted all of about 15 minutes. Nobody gives a shit about that meaningless franchise. I'm sure hundreds of white trash in Battle Ground are big fans, though. -

It was way more convenient for them to build an arena in Beaverton or SW of city limits.

Ahh, yes, Paul Allen had the foresight to build a new arena 12 years prior to the Sonics being sold out of town, at the same time that the Sonics had just been in the Finals, because he just new that someday it would make the most sense to have the main PNW team located in a metro-area with half the population of the Seattle-metro area.haie said:

You mean on land that was already zoned for an arena to be built in the biggest city in the state? If Eugene was the largest city in Oregon the Blazers would be located there, not in Portland.haie said:
It has nothing to do with the sonics. He didn't give a shit about them. The growth was happening west and SW of Portland Metro and it would have been easier to build an arena in Beaverton or Tualitin. Maybe even Happy Valley where there has been a ton of money pumped in.BleachedAnusDawg said:
Ahh, yes, Paul Allen had the foresight to build a new arena 12 years prior to the Sonics being sold out of town, at the same time that the Sonics had just been in the Finals, because he just new that someday it would make the most sense to have the main PNW team located in a metro-area with half the population of the Seattle-metro area.haie said:

The rose garden is just south of the Columbia river because Portland is just south of the Columbia river. Nba arenas are almost always downtown.haie said:

Nobody in WA State cares about the Blazers. Vancouver hillbillies don't count.haie said:
No it's not.BleachedAnusDawg said:
Hilarious take from a Blazer fan. If that's the case, Blazers moving to Seattle is a mere formality.haie said:
Keep waiting. Pump out a few more documentaries. It ain't happening.BennyBeaver said:

NBA doesn't want more colder climate cities. Free agents don't want to play there. Harder to maintain parity in a league that already struggles for it as is.
NBA just wants one franchise in the NW and Blazers are an old enough brand to leave where they are. They get Oregon and Washington State residents into them.
NBA doesn't like competing with all those other brands in Seattle. They'd rather have a new team in Vegas.
You have no clue what you're talking about.
The ๐น Garden is just south of the Columbia river for a reason.
It would have been much easier to build the new arena well outside of Portland.
It was way more convenient for them to build an arena in Beaverton or SW of city limits.
Paul Allen was a die hard blazer and envisioned them being the main Northwest team. So he forced the new arena being just across the bridge from Washington.
PS: the ๐น Garden isn't what I would consider downtown. And I lived in Portland for years.
In fact, he "forced" the Rose Garden right next to where the prior arena had already existed since 1960 because he's so smart.
He chose to deal with the headache of building it right across from Washington.
