UCLA freshman offensive lineman Thomas Cole announced he was retiring from football after a suicide attempt in early 2022, realizing that the sport “was not conducive for my mental health.”

“At first I was regretful I survived my attempt, but thankfully due to the people at the UCLA hospital, Paradigm residential treatment and my therapist Meg, I have come to a much brighter outlook for my future,” Cole said in a statement on social media. “For those who may be struggling, you are not alone and you are loved. It is okay to ask for help. Thank you to my family for being so loving during this process of learning to live again.”

Cole was a four-star recruit in the 2021 class according to 247Sports out of San Luis Obispo, Ca. He did not see action as a freshman.
