When our kids were in grade school they would send home the supplies list. They would always ask those who could to buy extra of certain items for the less fortunate kids. Credit the teachers union for an excellent job keeping the narrative alive to the point you'll be met with scorn to even question it.
Have never needed a cop or a fire department in 47 years either. I get absolutely nothing from these lazy fucks -

Yes, there are no lockers for kindergarten and grade school kids so a backpack is necessary. How long ago did you have kids in school, if you ever did?
The amount of materials they are given daily necessitates the need. And yes, they need a new one nearly every year because they get pretty beat up and kids do graduate from Dora the Explorer to Marvel and eventually to their favorite color with no characters.
