In yet another sign of leftist panic my man Gavin Newsom is floating forced compliance for substance abuse or mental illness

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California's governor unveiled a plan Thursday to offer more services to homeless people with severe mental health and addiction disorders even if that means forcing some into care, a move that many advocates of the homeless oppose as a violation of civil rights.
The proposal by Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, would require all counties to set up a mental health branch in civil court and provide comprehensive and community-based treatment to those suffering from debilitating psychosis.
People would be obligated to accept the care or risk criminal charges, if those are pending, and if not, they would be subject to processes already in place, such as involuntary psychiatric holds or court conservatorships.
“One of the most heartbreaking, heart-wrenching and yet curable challenges that we face ... is how do we serve the needs of individuals who are the sickest of the sick?” said Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency, at a news briefing in advance of a press conference by Newsom.
He said he expects the program called “Care Court” to apply to 7,000 to 12,000 people in California, although not all have to be homeless. Family members and outreach workers could recommend a person for a court-mandated program, which the governor's office plans to boost with more money for psychologists, treatment beds and services.
“The money is there. The investment is there. The beds are coming, the units are coming online,” said Jason Elliott, senior counselor to Newsom.
Maybe a band aid. Maybe a gross violation of human rights.

And the alternative is streets that look like we're a third world nation?
I have no problem with this.

It's hardly a recent phenomena
But a democrat suggested it so its not fascism or racist -
If it's done with the right spirit and integrity, then I agree with this.
But my support is done once Newsome declares Larry Elder a drug addict, etc. -
Homeless should absolutely be forced in to diversion programs as a part of being incarcerated. They are largely incapable of doing anything for themselves. The libs thought it was compassionate to let them stay in tents for years and kill their brain cells with meth, heroine, etc.

It's terribly damaging for them to be living on the streets. it's damaging to a city's morale to have that kind of filth and chaos on its streets. And of course there's the safety issue. It never should have gotten this bad.BleachedAnusDawg said:Homeless should absolutely be forced in to diversion programs as a part of being incarcerated. There will always be anecdotal evidence of abuse of any system set up and politicians are too weak to put up with angry housewives who feel it's unfair to force someone. Hence my One Flew Over analogy
Western State was mine for flooring back in the day when it still operated. Definitely not a bunch of fun guys who wanted to go fishing
A danger to the community or self with due process and lock them up

That's the problem. So many of them are permanently brain damaged. They are incapable of even cleaning up for themselves let alone wake up on time and go to work at McDonald's.BleachedAnusDawg said:Homeless should absolutely be forced in to diversion programs as a part of being incarcerated. The crowd that was for Covid vaccine mandates on kids to go to school will be against the homeless being required to get help of any kind, well except for funding the NGO’s.
If I had to choose I would only make it mandatory to satisfy probation after a crime. Just swooping people up off the street seems too arbitrary in a sense and could be used for bad things, like thought crime.

I think if you are unvaxxed they should be able to include you in this. Before you kill gramma.

It's not arbitrary. If I go to a State Park and don't pay my camping fee and refuse to pay and then don't leave, I'd get hauled off. Make camping illegal on public property and then haul them off. Sheriff Joe in Arizona hauled them off to tents. If they are dealing or in possession of meth or fentanyl charge them with that and keep them locked up. Pretending you can put them into a $500,000 apartment and have then stop using or stop being crazy is our current solution and we don't have enough money to do that and it doesn't work.Bob_C said:The crowd that was for Covid vaccine mandates on kids to go to school will be against the homeless being required to get help of any kind, well except for funding the NGO’s.
