Putin was trying to limit property damage and loss of life, hoping the people would welcome becoming part of Russia again. Didn't happen and now the gloves are off. It's gonna get very ugly moving forward. More than likely Ukraine is split and the half that isn't part of Russia will not dare cozy up to NATO. The Poles wanted to give advanced fighters to Ukraine pilots but EU nixed it. NATO wants no part of putting troops in Ukraine.
