Question for poasters who were alive during this bowl: did it feel like UW deserved a share of the title?

I was real young, but I remember my dad talking about how the Huskies were screwed probably up until the '91 NC. BYU was the Boise State of the mid 80s I guess, except the idiotic voters gave them credit for beating WAC crap.

I remember watching BYU kill us the next September, but it was a different year obviously.

Absolutely. BYU did not play a ranked team the whole season. They struggled to beat a 6-6 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. It was a travesty.
    Agreed 100%

Though we have ourselves to blame for losing a game to USC that year... man, what could have been.

It also didn't help national perception the following year when we lost to BYU 31 to 3 -- the weak after losing to Oklahoma State at home (the '85 team took a big step back from the '84 team).

I wasn't old enough to remember but I've looked at the historical research.

This guy who fixes all the polls said it should have ben UW/Florida as a tie for #1

    http://www.tiptop25.com/fixing1984.html

It really taints our history. We hear this shit about half a NC or a share of the NC. Its BS. The 91 team as per SRS is the second best team of the last 40-50 years. That is the 2nd best team out of over 4000 teams. There is a 50-50 chance that we will never see another team (from any school) that special in our lives.

The 84 team should at least have won half or the share as they say.

WHAT? Dawgs got hammershafted in '84. Everybody knew how good UW was that yer. SOS proved everything. UW was gutted in 85. BYU would have scored 3 points on UW in '84

Florida was on probation in '84 for paying cash to players.

UW was clearly better than OU and BYU. Would have been fun to see a UW-Fla matchup in '84. The Gators were absolutely loaded, with Wilber Marshall, John L. Williams, etc.

Back then, the SEC was punished for that kind of thing.

joking aside, uw wasn't really better than Oregon when they played. uw had 109 yards offense and 3 first downs. won 17-10 on a blocked punt for a td and ron milus punt return for a td.

The 80s sound like they were a good decade.

Only if you like cocaine and Wham!

For Husky football, it was pretty fucking good.

I remember it well, and have that game on DVD. We would have kicked BYU's ass that year.

    Yes and no.

BYU didn't deserve shit, but UW didn't win its own conference.

Neither did Bama when they beat LSU in the BCS. The 1984 PAC 10 was the SEC. Won the Fiesta Rose and Orange Bowls
The two best teams might have been UW and Nebraska and neither won their conference.

I'm somewhat sympathetic to Florida too.

BYU picked the right year to go undefeated though. Every other contender for the title had a big issue against them.

Was Bosworth suspended for this game?

No, he was a freshman and played in the game. Was kept in check.

It was more than that... On January 1st, 1985, USC won the Rose Bowl over Ohio State 20-17, UCLA beat Miami in the Fiesta Bowl 39-37, and Washington beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl 28-17. A Pac-10 sweep on New Year's Day.

Great point Sven. But, the conference was incredibly good at the top, it flat kicked ass that year. USC went on to beat Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, UCLA beat Miami in the Fiesta Bowl and UW beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Three "BCS" Bowl victories for one conference, and the biggest win was UW over Oklahoma. Yes and no applies, as it often does with the MNC, but without question, UW deserved it more than BYU did.

Miami was 8-5 that year, the Fiesta had yet to become the Bowl it would be ...

Still a good year for the Big 3 in the Pac though.
