That’s where he was when he got the Michigan gig.
He went from Ball State to the head coaching position at San Diego State and somehow two long-time coordinators went to work for him - Al Borges as OC and Rocky Long at DC.
SDSU was thinking of dropping football at the time.
Hoke turned the SDSU into a viable/competitive team. Hoke parlayed his success at SDSU into the head coaching position at Michigan. He took Al Borges with him to Michigan after Rich Rodriguez was fired.
Rocky Long became head coach at SDSU for many years.
Hoke failed at Michigan and dispatched Borges as a sacrificial lamb to buy another year or two at Go Blue.
Hoke spent one infamous year as DC at Oregon.
Somehow he ended up back as Head Coach at San Diego St.
Trivia: Rocky Long was a DC for Jerry Pettibone at OSU in the 90’s; Hoke was a DLine coach under Pettibone around the same time.
