Merle HaggardYears ago I would have said Johnny Cash in this debate. But over time I've come to appreciate Merle more and more. And he is the greatest song writer in the history of the genre and it's not really that close.
Football's the still the roughest thing on campus. And the kid's here still respeck the college dean. -
Buck OwensFor me, Buck was country music in the 60"s. I got into Merle and JC later, and love both. Our house watched his TV shows, and Hee Haw every Saturday night, in between The Honeymooners and Lawrence Welk (Yes, Kiddies, there was a time when it was one TV per household...). Glen is fabulous, but a tweener for me, he was played heavily on AM pop stations back then.
Even though he will probably not get a vote, I have to give a shout out to this, since it is a top3 drunken sing along for me...https://youtu.be/KAO7vs_Q9is

Glen CampbellI’m a sucker for a guitar wizard

Roger Millertoo many dang good ones in that list - I thought that Roger Miller did more for spreading country music - hell - most didn't even know he was country. My folks watched the Jimmy Dean show and any other country show that was on and Miller was always on them.

Me, too. My father, though Irish, grew up in the barrios of Texas. Every Sunday while I was growing up the family made enchiladas together and listened to Marty Robbins, Loretta, Patsy, Jim Reeves... good memories.Fishpo31 said:For me, Buck was country music in the 60"s. Roger MillerIn the 60's I listened to Miller as he was a cross over with top 40, I did not appreciate Merle till much later. Buck was the other one from the 60's that I knew, Cash got popular in the 70s.
I voted based on my burned out brain cell memory banks
EDIT another cross overhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBeOddejiGw
