UCLA Couch Sale

The '82 Washington-UCLA game was one of the best defensive classics I've ever seen

Classy dude. Waiting for our group to be seated in a restaurant in NB the night before my final wedding (he was waiting with his wife), he noticed a very large ring I was wearing, and came up and asked if it was a Superb Owl ring (it was not). Had a little convo, I paid my respects to him...After being seated, he sent a bottle of champagne to our table...RIP, CSB...Gritty Little Bruin

Donohue had a winning record against James. No USC coach did
-
UCLA was a real program for much of his tenure. Had some great teams in the 70s and 80s. When the PAC 12 was tuff.
-
Last coach who could consistently win at UCLA.
Top 5 Pac coach of all tim.
RIP. -
Their '82 team was 10-1-1, with the only loss being to Washington, 10-7Kaepsknee said:UCLA was a real program for much of his tenure. Had some great teams in the 70s and 80s. When the PAC 12 was tuff.

But still James had almost the same number of conference wins with 2 fewer seasons at the helm. Still the best Pac 12 coach of the modern era, unless we want to go with Carroll.YellowSnow said:RaceBannon said:Donohue had a winning record against James. No USC coach did

I think James has the best blend of longevity and success that typically is associated with greatness. Pete was undoubtedly a better coach on a per game basis but look at somebody like Kelly - he was too, until he wasn't.YellowSnow said:

USC started a black QB in the 60's
And no USC coach other than Caroll can even approach that record
Maybe some of the olden time guys -
Neither McKay nor James had to play a ranked Oregon State.

Back in the good old days, the LA schools and Washington ran the conference. No trash from Eugene

Glad Beavs had a huge celebration to remember losing to UW in 1967RaceBannon said:

Terry Donahue played DT at UCLA during the 1965 and 1966 seasons. He was 6’0, 190-195 lbs. Heaviest DLineman on the Bruins was 225 lbs. The good old PAC-8. My how things have changed over the years, particularly the size and speed of the players.Fishpo31 said:Classy dude. Absolutely no comparison between the Beavs victory over USC, 3-0, on a muddy field at Parker Stadium. Old-timers still talk about DT Jess Lewis chasing and catching OJ Simpson from behind. Muddy, sloppy field and rainy day gave Beavs the advantage and led to their victory.Kaepsknee said:

The real “Toilet Bowl” was the 1983 Civil War game (OSU vs. UO) at Autzen Stadium, Eugene, that ended in a 0-0 tie.
1983: UO 0, OSU 0. Eleven fumbles. Five interceptions. Four missed field goals. The staggering ineptitude of the scoreless game that becomes known as "The Toilet Bowl" marks the low point for the Civil War.
On the Ducks' final play, with one second left on the clock, Chris Miller throws a 15-yard pass to Kwante Hampton, who laterals to Ladaria Johnson. The play nearly goes the 82-yard distance, but Johnson is tackled at the 14. Officials rule he had stepped out of bounds near the 50 anyway.
"It was almost like neither team wanted to win," said UO coach Rich Brooks, uttering one of the most improbable thoughts in the history of the series.

Jimmy Jones started as QB in the late 60’s.
