Afghan expansion. China says it’s eyeing a major expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative into Afghanistan as the U.S. ducks out of the country. According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, expanding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor – a sprawling jumble of BRI infrastructure projects – into Afghanistan is a natural way to help stabilize the country. But the devil is in the details. Expect China to move gingerly to avoid getting swamped with security burdens that it has little interest in taking on.
