With the announcement today that Josh Shirley and Taylor Hindy are leaving the Washington Huskies football program with the intent to transfer, I thought it’d be a good time to catch up on the list of scholarship players who have left UW since the early-December departure of former coach Steve Sarkisian.

This is not a list of players who left because Sarkisian left, nor is it intended as an illustration of remarkable turnover or anything like that. It’s simply a list of scholarship players with eligibility remaining who have left UW, for one reason or another, since the Sarkisian era officially ended. There are now nine such players.

(Listed alphabetically, using bio information from the 2013 Apple Cup roster, with their class listed according to their 2014 status.)

DE Connor Cree (6-foot 4, 260 pounds / Skyline High School / Sammamish, Wash. / R-Jr.)

— Cree played in 12 of UW’s games in 2013, and finished the season with 11 tackles and a sack. He decided to leave the program at season’s end, telling Chris Fetters of Scout.com that his decision had nothing to do with the coaching change, but was made because “I just lost the passion for it.”

CB Patrick Enewally (6-foot-1, 184 pounds / Gahr High School / Norwalk, Calif. / R-Fr.)

— Enewally redshirted the 2013 season, then was dismissed from the team by Petersen during spring practices in April, allegedly because he struck a teammate during an off-field altercation, according to a source.

OL Taylor Hindy (6-foot-4, 315 pounds / Chaminade Prep / West Hills, Calif. / R-So.)

— Redshirted in 2012, then appeared in two games in 2013, against Idaho State and Colorado, in mop-up duty. He will apparently seek to transfer, according to UW. No reason was given for his departure.

OL Erik Kohler (6-foot-4, 294 pounds / Oaks Christian School / Camarillo, Calif. / R-Sr.)

— After playing quite a bit as a freshman and starting every game as a sophomore, Kohler’s junior season was wiped out by a knee injury, and he was slowed by a foot injury in 2013, when he made two starts and otherwise served as a backup. He chose not to return for his fifth-year senior season for medical reasons, leaving the program prior to the Fight Hunger Bowl. (And you could argue, too, that Kohler’s decision to leave the team might have been made before Sarkisian actually left.)

DT Lawrence Lagafuaina (6-foot, 334 pounds / Aiea High School / Aiea, Hawaii / R-Sr.)

— Redshirted in 2010, then served as a backup defensive tackle the next three seasons. His 2012 season was cut short by a torn ACL after three games, and he battled concussion problems in 2013. Lagafuaina left the team following the season, and while he hasn’t said anything publicly, the assumption by many is that his decision not to return for a fifth year was health-related.

RB Ryan McDaniel (6-foot, 204 pounds / North High School / Torrance, Calif. / R-So.)

— McDaniel had 10 carries for 47 yards in 2013, all against Idaho State. He was limited by injury throughout spring practices this year, and took a medical retirement shortly after.

DE Josh Shirley (6-foot-3, 232 pounds / Kaiser High School / Fontana, Calif. / R-Sr.)

— We covered the pertinent details of Shirley’s career in our story earlier. No specific reason was given by UW for his desire to transfer, though The Seattle Times reported that he wants to play closer to home.

WR Damore’ea Stringfellow (6-foot-2, 225 pounds / Rancho Verde High School / Perris, Calif. / So.)

— Stringfellow emerged toward the end of 2013 as one of the Huskies’ best receivers, catching 20 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown. But he was suspended indefinitely along with QB Cyler Miles in early February after being accused of assault following a post-Super Bowl celebration in the University District. He was subsequently charged with three misdemeanors, pleaded guilty to each, and the school announced on May 14 that Stringfellow would seek to transfer. He has since told various outlets he will sign with Mississippi, after initially telling various outlets he was headed to Nebraska.

DB Cleveland Wallace (5-foot-11, 171 pounds / Oak Grove High School / San Jose, Calif. / R-So.)

— After redshirting in 2012, Wallace played in nine games in 2013 with nine tackles and an interception, then left the program after the Apple Cup. He transferred to his hometown school, San Jose State.

*NOTE: Technically, you could include LB Jamaal Kearse and DB Taz Stevenson on this list, since each had one year of eligibility remaining, but we left them off because it was decided prior to Sarkisian’s departure that they wouldn’t return in 2014. Kearse’s football career is over — he said during bowl-game preparations that he felt it was simply time to stop playing — and Stevenson is reportedly headed to Hawaii. Kearse and Stevenson were part of the four-player group of fourth-year juniors who were honored during senior-day festivities. The other two players — WR DiAndre Campbell and DE Andrew Hudson — wound up sticking around, participated in spring practices, and will return as fifth-year seniors.
