We're too small of a country to attract the top athletes of the world.

The US was never good. Every time they win a few games (in this case 1 game out of 4), dipshits pretend they are good. They are horrible and have always been horrible.

If it wasn't for the US goalie going on a Dominic Hasek in his prime type of run, they would have been laughed out of Brazil a week ago.

The US defense left the 2008-20.... Cougs D and pretty much any Nick Holt coached D shaking their heads after those performances.

The problem isn't really Klinsman (although there are probably better coaches). They were 31st in time of possession (or whatever the faggy Euro term for it is). That's just not okay. Belgium got off way more shots and had way more opportunities, and so did Germany, and Portugal to an extent.

Kids aren't really developed and trained the same way as they are in Europe. Even the select teams here are probably a few notches below the equivalent in Italy, Spain, Germany etc. I saw all this self-congratulatory "Yay! We tried hard and lost to a better team" bullshit on social media. Jesus. I'm a fucking American. I want to do better than the round of 16. It was an accomplishment in the 90s. Now it's expected. Get to the semis.

Disagree with RoadDawg. While USA was terrible, it no longer is. Its basically average but adjust for the huge population and thats below average. USA was terrible in the 70s 80s and 90s but now they've made it to the round of 16 three of the last 4 cups. They are better than Mexico and England now. They are better but they aren't competing with the worlds best consistently for another 10-20 years.

As far as this one, it was Howard & Klinsman who made the difference. Otherwise USA would be way below average. Almost every move Klinsman made worked out well and Howard was great and is one of the worlds best goalies.

The media coverage is clueless though, making it like this was some great run. In 2002 the US should have beat Germany in the quarterfinals. Germany ended up losing in the title game. German players and coaches all said after the game, US was the better team. US dominated possession and had tons of great shots but Germany's goalie, the player of the tournament stifled them. He was like Howard was today but even better. Had US won, they would have beat Korea and made the finals. That was the potential cinderella run. 50-50 chance we might see something like that chance again in our lifetime.

Where are all of those people who were critical of Klinsman's pre-tournament comments about our chances to win the entire thing?

We try hard, have a few good players, and are improving. But there's still a ways to go between us and the top teams in the world.

US is a generation away from competing regularly with the big boys, but they did better than anyone expected going into the tournament. Klinsman did a phenomenal job with the players he had.

And hey, they finished in the top 16 which is higher than UW basketball or football has done in a long, long time. Guess I'll get to watch Brazil-Germany and Holland-Argentina next week down in Brazil.

Losing in the round of 16 is still horrible.

Comparing the US to Mexico and England is like comparing Washington to Georgia Tech and Minnesota.

I've been hearing the US team is improving for the last 20 years but the fact is that's not true. USA has been around the 15ish team in the world for a good dozen years. This 2014 team was not as good as some of the past teams. The best player still plays in freaking Seattle, that should tell you all you need to know. The gap still exists and i havent heard of a crop of young prodigies that would make me think its gonna change soon.
For a country with such a large population and more registered players than countries like Spain, France, Holland, Portugal, England, the performance is actually below average, like Chest said. They need more time indeed. A lot more time.

    So. . . . "go coogs?"

I heard a bunch of idiots yelling it at the bar before the game (for whatever reason), and you are taking the torch?

    Sweet

The US has no playmakers. Belgium has guys in the midfield and at forward that play in the top leagues in the world. They created chance after chance, blowing past defenders while dribbling. The US doesn't have one guy that can create like that, and they never have. They could have won if Wondo or whatever the fuck his name is hit the goal at the end of regulation, but Belgium destroyed the US. The US was lucky it wasn't 5-1. Until the US has a couple of top 50 players that play for the top European teams, they will never do shit.

Yeah it reminded me of the game where Ty almost beat USC even though they outgaines us by like 300 yards.
