The rise of the Portal, and the decline of class “balance.”

Used to be, folks fretted a lot in this space about recruiting class “balance.” Seven WRs here, no D-linemen there. Shit! Two QBs in one class, none in the next. Fuck! Why do we need two scholly’d kickers? Look at the holes in our future depth chart!
Seems like balance worries have sold the couch.
The Portal now means you can recruit purely to a “best athlete available” ethos. Overloaded in your LB room? No sweat, Portal. Forgot to sign a RB last year? Big deal, Portal.
Is it bad for the sport that length-of-stay is on the decline? Will free agency degrade team “culture?” Probably, but it can’t be helped. The Portal is here to stay.
Successful programs will adjust how they construct recruiting classes to maximize pure talent acquisition, irrespective of position “need” or class “balance.”
They will extend more offers, worrying less about finishing second. Because a “hat on the table” today might mean an incoming transfer tomorrow. Build as many relationships as you can.
They will embrace the Portal as an asset, not a liability. Because logjams will sort themselves out. And you can always plug-and-play later.
