Full Metal JacketUntouchables and Good Morning Vietnam would get my votes in a lot of years. By the first 20 mins of FMJ is as good as any movie ever made. And the rest of the film is still classic.
-
Full Metal JacketStronger year than I’d expected. Bride/Vietnam/Weapon. Last emperor is what it is, well made, never care to see again.
I loved Untouchables back in the day, watched over & over as a kid. I saw it in the last five years, and did not feel like it holds up. -
The Princess BrideToo many classic quotes.
-
Wall StreetLunch is for wimps was a company motto

Full Metal Jacket
Untouchables has a little bit of Hollywood cheese but overall I think it holds up.GrundleStiltzkin said:Stronger year than I’d expected. Bride/Vietnam/Weapon. Last emperor is what it is, well made, never care to see again.

Full Metal JacketR. Lee Ermey.

Empire of The SunMy real answer is The Princess Bride, but I had to cast a sentimental vote for this one.
In my youth I was an expat kid living in Shanghai so I massively over-identified with this movie, and I find that time period (1920s-1945) in APAC endlessly fascinating. And horrifying. -
Full Metal Jacket
People forget WWII started in 1937. Am I right @CarlinHistoryBuff69 or am I right?Gladstone said:My real answer is The Princess Bride, but I had to cast a sentimental vote for this one.

Empire of The Sun'37 was the Marco Polo bridge incident, '31 was the formal invasion and occupation of Manchuria though and the establishment of the Manchukuo regime. Shoutout to @Doog_de_Jour 's vote. I'm a massive Pacific Theater buff and will jump into the history board some day and roll the sleeves up.

Wall StreetWW2 started at the end of WW1

Full Metal JacketI use lines from the Princess Bride and Full Metal Jacket in about equal numbers when out on the river for a fishing trip.
This one was tough, but FMJ's opening 10 minutes sealed it for me.
I'll watch either one of them any time. -
The Last Emperor
Thanks Gladdy! Yes, the Pacific theater and APAC history needs mor pub...especially since countries like China, India, Vietnam, Russia, etc. are going to keep being such big influences on the globe. Important for people to understand how things got to how they currently are.Gladstone said:'37 was the Marco Polo bridge incident, '31 was the formal invasion and occupation of Manchuria though and the establishment of the Manchukuo regime. Raising ArizonaRather easily.
Full Metal Jacket and Princess Bride are also worthy. -
Full Metal JacketI'll just copy pasta this over here:

F.O. Row Peter Puffer, you left off...
-
Full Metal JacketShout out to @89ute (and cake eating peter puffer rowers) for 3 o'clock high!
Also Hooligan was a big fan of The Secret of my Success
-
Full Metal JacketNormally, I'd think this lead should hold up, but after watching that 1988 Die Hard bullshit, I have zero faith in this board.
-
The Princess BrideI expected to be called a pussy and be forced to lean in and own it. Shocked to see I'm not alone. I'm glad Raising Arizona got a vote: under the radar classic.
FMJ is rad and quotable, but I quote TPB more than all but maybe two or three movies.
I agree on The Untouchables. Used to be one of my favorites, but I watched it last year after learning my brother and his whole family/friend circle had never heard of it. I was all excited to bring them this kickass movie, then... thud. And I didn't blame them. Didn't hold up as well as I expected. -

Good Morning Vietnam!!! I'm mean really there are good movies on the list but this comedy is as good today as it was then. When we were blowing the game against Utah this year and had the fucked up punt fiasco i had to put the game on pause and mix a bourbon and watch GMV with my wife to cheer myself up before watching the rest of the game.

Full Metal JacketThe deal with FMJ is it is the closest you can ever get to Marine Corps boot camp experience in that era. I know this because my Dad (RIP) was a Marine who arrived in Parris Island in 1961 for fun times with DIs. I watched this movie with him many years ago and he told me Boot Camp was EXACTLY like they filmed it. No Hollywood bullshit. Exact interpretation of that experience. Nobody but R Lee Ermey, or some other REAL former DI, could have pulled it off. It's perfection.
Add to that 2 Live Crew sampling the hooker for "Me So Horny" and a legend is born. -
Wall StreetKids died at Parris Island
That first half of the movie is must watch -
Full Metal Jacket
R Lee had an amazing appearance on Carolla pod in 2015, including stories of running a whorehouse not from the Marine base on Okinawa.Swaye said:The deal with FMJ is it is the closest you can ever get to Marine Corps boot camp experience in that era. Full Metal JacketAs everyone else has stated, opening of FMJ is amazing. But, I think the whole movie is great and will watch if I see it’s on regardless of where in the movie I happen to join. Princess Bride a not too distant second place for me.
