“The individuals involved were former cornerbacks coach Todd Lyght and linebacker Sav’ell Smalls of Garfield High School in Seattle, according to ESPN. Lyght, who was an All-American cornerback at Notre Dame in 1989, was fired in January 2020.
Smalls, one of the top prospects in the 2020 class, signed with Washington. He was mixed up in similar infraction cases involving Florida’s Dan Mullen and Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher, which led to the pair of head coaches receiving show causes last year for improper recruiting contact.
The NCAA also found that Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly had impermissible off-campus contact with a recruit in October 2019. The player recognized Kelly as he walked through a high school cafeteria in Pickerington, Ohio, and requested a photo with him. The NCAA said Kelly initially declined before allowing the picture.
The infractions case was adjudicated through the NCAA’s negotiated resolution process. Notre Dame and the NCAA agreed that the case involved Level II and III violations.“

The impermissible visits happened before July 1 2019 and while school was in session, so Joey Thomas was still the head coach at Garfield.
I’ve met Todd Lyght when he was an intern at Oregon, he’s not the brightest lyght in the room. But Florida and Texas A&M did the same thing. Did none of them know the rules? They did. Teams still do it. No high school coach is going to decline or rat out Notre Dame or Florida. So I wonder who did?
It was unfortunate for Joey Thomas that schools got upset at Michigan for hiring Devin Bush Sr in order to land Devin Bush Jr. They weren’t as upset at 5-star OT Trey Smith’s sister getting hired as an admin assistant to the head coach at Tennessee, but that’s very different. Because Michigan or someone else may want to take recruits North with such dastardly tricks they decided something must be done. A new rule came into being, you can’t hire the relative or coach of a signed recruit for two years prior or two years after.
Tre’Shaun Harrison meant that Joey Thomas couldn’t join Willie at his dream job until 2020. The best-laid schemes of mice and go oft awry and leave us nothing but $20 million buyouts. Joey Thomas was hired by Willie to be an analyst at FAU in spring of 2020, and last week he was promoted to an on field role as WRs coach.
