McConnell's aides are saying he now sees this as the best way to rid the Republican party of Trump.

An impeachment with Senate conviction means Trump can never hold public office again.
McConnell and Schumer both say there is a 2004 Senate procedural rule that allows them to call an emergency session of the Senate before inauguration day -- and this doesn't require unanimous Senate approval.
