Why the defense sucks

Its because it is repeating retard scheme mistakes

Stanford TD 1st possession:

Stanford TD 2nd possession:

They look the same because Stanford ran the exact same play and UW ran the exact same defense, not lined up correctly against the extra OL, two safeties and a LB too deep, Bronson and Tuli get cratered inside on both plays, and ZTF gets held on the first but blocked well on the second.

They have fucking 3 OL and 1TE (plus another pulling guard) with their hand in the ground and we line up with 2 fucking DL on the strong side of the ball with their hand in the ground... TWICE!

At least Asa frickin' decapitated the ball carrier at the end of both plays.

I'm pretty sure that's Taki in on both plays, not Tuli. Which is even more of an indictment on the scheme since they should both be in in obvious goal line situations.

I think you're right. Can't get a clear shot of him in either play, but I don't see who else it could be.

You'll notice ZTF is getting eliminated by the TE on both plays.

Our defense sucks because at this moment we have 4 dudes who can reliably make exceptional plays. Eddie, ZTF, Molden, McDuff. All you need to do is run the ball to whatever side of the field has less of those 4 and Bam, 6+yards.

Say what you will about talent, talent is trash. Instincts and average Power 5 athleticism is all you need to succeed on defense. Watch Asa turner, watch Sirmon, Watch everyone but the 4 horsemen. They make they plays when there are no obstacles and even then find a way to mess that up some times. Watch Eddie, he finds a way to make a play regardless of obstacles, because he is instinctive. If you aren't instinctive you need to be a physical freak to overcompensate, a la Vita Vea.

Real truth, our blue chip ratio doesn't mean shit if they don't have those instincts. Because blue chips include such winners as.... Colson Yankoff, Draco Bynum, Trey Lowe, Brandon McKinney, Ariel Ngata, Wellington, Ghilchrist. Dare I go on.

Our scheme is fine. It has produced consistent strong defenses year in and year out. We have one big difference this year. Not the blue chip ratio. It is we have 0 Instincts at the safety position. You can put your safety 20 yards deep... if they are instinctive enough to cheat up when they can get away with it, shade to one side of the field if that is the read, time the snap count, if they aren't a pussy. We've had that for years, even Myles Bryant had that. He was instinctive with below average physical gifts. This year we see the difference between the two. And that is the reason why we suck. It isn't scheme it isn't blue chips. It is lack of instincts. Nobody would say Eddie is a physical force, an elite athlete among elite athletes. He is just a fucking instinctive football player who makes plays. Our defense only works with a safety version of Eddie.

    Fin.

The scheme is fucking garbage. Its garbage because it isn't utilizing the players that they currently have. You play with the team you have, not the team you want.

What has occurred on the field is not a defensive talent (or bullets) issue and a lot more to do with the defense putting guys into a position of almost certain failure.

The bad scheme put Sirmon in one on one man coverage with no safety help in the slot on 3rd down. The bad scheme called for a 10+ yard deep 8 man zone on 3rd and 6. The bad scheme continuously lined up with fewer guys in the box against Stanford. The bad scheme puts in a dime package with and extremely light DL (ZTF, Bronson, Smalls) and then is surprised when Stanford checks into a draw play that nets them 7+ yards every time. The bad scheme watches Stanford sub in an extra lineman into their goal-line package and only puts 2 DL against 4 OL/TE on the strong side of the formation (twice).

You are right about Asa being a major problem, I guarantee all of his teammates know by now he is a pussy and isn't going to come downhill and clean up any messes, everyone has to play just a little bit more carefully (slower) because Bryant or Rapp or Budda aren't behind them flying in to clean up anything that goes wrong. He is easily one of my least favorite players in a long time.

HOWEVER, UW has often played with deep safeties (bend but dont beak) and been mostly ok... there is a even bigger problem with the scheme, The Defensive line...

The entire "scheme" has always been reliant on the interior 2 DL (Shelton, Vea, Qualls, Gaines, Levi...) occupying 3+ OL on every play. For the first time in a long time UW does not have an interior DL that can occupy 3-4 OL... Not only can they not contain 2-gap at all, Not only can not a single interior DL command a double team, they struggle to not get dominated one on one at the point of attack.

Just watch any mildly successful play and you will see an interior DL doing some dumb shit, from diving into a wrong gap, getting steamrolled, diving inside, or pushing too deep upfield and out of the play.

For the past 8+ years UW has "cheated" by using 2 DL to play 4 gaps and cancel out 3+ OL... The scheme has become dependent on it...

Kwat needs to adjust the scheme because he has a DL that cant do what he has repeatedly asked them to do.

UW has more than enough bullets to field a good defense, but notlikethis.gif

How much of the "Bad DL" play is really just Sirmon wearing Velcro on his jersey? That dude is the linebacker equivilant of a velcro bouncy wall. I agree that our interior hasn't played to it's potential, but Taki has been eating double teams left & right along with Faatui or whatever the fuck his name is. That is why Eddie has been able to average 12 tackles a game.

I have seen way more D lineman 10 yards back on a run play than in previous years. But realistically if we had a safety with a dick between his legs this wouldn't be a big deal.

The Roman empire is fine. It has produced consistent strong armies year in and year out. We have one big difference this year. Not the citizen ratio. It is we have 0 loyalty from the barbarians. You can put your barbarian in Ægyptus... if they are loyal enough to bring in slaves when they can get away with it, suppress the local population when that is necessary, bring spoils of war back to Rome, if they aren't a pussy. We've had that for 500 years, even Crassus had that. He was loyal with below average intelligence. This year we see the difference between the two. And that is the reason why we suck. It isn't economy, it isn't citizens. It is lack of loyalty. Nobody would say Petronius is a military force, a tactical genius among tactical geniuses. He is just a fucking loyal servant of Rome of goes to war. Our empire only works with a barbarian version of Petronius.

At the individual level, their TE was crushing ZTF, more than effectively sealing him to create that little soft spot.

Is that scheme or should he be beating the TE? Honest question.

In the first one, he gets outside of the TE and the TE almost pulls him into the pile. On the second one, the TE just eats him up and pushes him in.

If the TE doesn't beat him on both plays, he's there to force the running back either back in (nothing there) or outside, where someone might make a play.
