Derham Cato's background

After serving as a GA under John Donovan at Vanderbilt, Cato took the OL/TE job at Davidson in 2014 under OC Bush Hamdan. That year they went 1-11 and averaged 23 ppg in the brutal Pioneer Football League. Their lone win was against the scrappy College of Faith - Charlotte Saints. Hamdan left after that year to join Petersen's staff and Cato took over as the OC. In their first and only year with OC Cato the Davidson WIldcats averaged 12.5 ppg. After the season he followed Hamdan's footsteps and joined Petersen's staff in a quality control position.

Outside of his lone year as OC, Cato has spent his entire coaching career working under offensive masterminds John Donovan, Jonathan Smith, and Bush Hamdan. How shocking that with this pedigree he has struggled so much on the recruiting trail.

Imagine firing the guy that has had arguably the best position group results consistently over the past 6+ years and hiring Cato as the replacement mostly because recruiting fags were upset the old coach was churning out great results with 3 stars and not doing it with 5 stars.

The problem with six sigma/HR/process over production academic types is the focus on THEIR process regardless of the objective result. I’ve dealt with the six sigma types, cultists to the process. Any other process that exceeds expectations is unsustainable, if their process fails to meet expectation it is a failure to properly execute the process.

Cato just needs his first pelt on the wall, and the accompanying stink-finger confidence.

Reading a 247 interview with Cato. I'm pretty sure he posts here

RUNNING DOWN THE TIGHT ENDS IN YOUR ROOM RIGHT NOW...
"Cade (Otton) is a workhorse. He's an awesome guy. Everything you want in a player, he encompasses. Just a lunch pail, blue collar-type attitude, comes to work every day, is always locked in, always laser-focused. He can give you a lot in all facets of the game, the run game and the pass game. So we're really excited about him coming back and really being that leader in that group. Obviously with Hunter (Bryant) leaving it's going to leave another spot to be taken, and we're really excited about guys coming up to do that. Talking with Jacob Kizer, a senior, coming back, been banged up the past year with injuries but he's been awesome this off-season, been kicking butt in the workouts and done a great job. A guy like Devin Culp, his athleticism, his potential is limitless. He's had an awesome off-season. Again, his focus and determination, he really realizes this is his chance to take his game to the next level. Really excited about him, his combination of size and speed. A couple other guys, obviously the two freshmen are in the mix. They've done a great job. Obviously they need to get out on the grass and prove themselves, but they've done a great job in Mark (Redman) and Mason (West). And Jack Westover, he's kind of our Swiss Army knife. He's done a lot, he's carved out a nice little role for himself this past year or two and really look for him to develop as well."
