I had no problem locking down at the beginning when we didn't really know what the fuck was going on but we've had a while to assess the situation and remaining locked down just doesn't seem like the right move. We either stay locked down until a vaccine is created, fucking up our economy in the process, or we try to open back up smartly and monitor the situation as we go.

My fear is that politicians went all in on this shit at the beginning(which I don't have a problem with) and now are scared of changing course and admitting both themselves and the experts were wrong. Also seems like a lot of politicians would rather "play it safe" by staying locked down thinking that an absence of bad news is better than dealing with the bad news(increased disease levels) that will happen when we open back up.

Mostly agree. Zero humility among elected leaders.

Trying to avoid the economic disaster of having to shut down again is a real consideration and not merely a matter of being "scared".

I definitely think opening back up only to have to shut down again would not be good. Maybe I'm a little too optimistic but I'm hoping that we've learned some lessons and shored up our emergency healthcare programs so that we can absorb the wave of infections opening up would cause. Also, hoping the hardest hit places like NYC have seen the worst of it on the first go around.

"They" are going to shut it down for the 'second wave' regardless. That play was easier to flush out than walking the safety up to stop the 'you just don't understand/too stupid" nonsense as the go-to argument.
