Oregon OL Penei Sewell receives multiple Heisman votes

“After taking home the biggest honor for an offensive lineman, Oregon left tackle Penei Sewell picked up some Heisman Trophy consideration including a vote from a prominent national media member. With Joe Burrow winning the 2019 Heisman Trophy on Saturday, the Heisman voters were allowed to release their personal ballots and on a number of them was Oregon left tack Penei Sewell.

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman tweeted out that while his first-place vote went to this year's winner, he thinks Sewell was right up there in consideration for the award.”

”Feldman wasn't alone in including Sewell on his Heisman ballot. Oregonian columnist Jon Canzano also included the sophomore left tackle, proclaiming that the lineman should be a legitimate contender for the award in 2020.

"Sewell is not a quarterback, I know. He doesn’t play running back, either. He wears No. 58, for crying out loud, and touched the ball only once this season during a game. He carried on a one-yard rush in the Pac-12 Championship game. But there wasn’t a more important impactful player in the conference this season than Oregon’s left tackle," said canzano in a column on Sunday morning.

It's been almost 20 years since an offensive lineman finished in the top ten of the Heisman Trophy voting and even longer since one has been in the top five but Sewell has racked up the accolades in his sophomore season and still has a shot to be a Unanimous All-American.

In addition to winning the Outland trophy earlier this week, Sewell has been named to the All-Pac-12 Conference First Team, Walter Camp Foundation First-Team All-American, Sports Illustrated First-Team All-American, Pro Football Focus First-Team All-American, CBS Sports First-Team All-American, USA Today First-Team All-American, FWAA First-Team All-American, Bleacher Report First-Team All-American, The Athletic First-Team All-American, and AP Pac-12 Co-offensive Player of the Year.

The lineman was recognized last week by Pro Football Focus as their 2019 Pac-12 Player of the Year. PFF uses a play-by-play grading system and Sewell is on pace to shatter the records for an offensive lineman in both run protection and pass protection.”
