All Cohen had to say was that he paid off Daniels as a personal favor to Trump on account of their friendship and poof, the money could no longer be called "campaign funds." But since they were squeezing Cohen six ways to Sunday he willingly made the statement about how he did it to protect Trump's election chances as part of the plea deal.
The whole thing was pretty fucking sleazy on both sides.
