Homeless has only been a problem for 2 years
After the president mildly protested that only “some of our cities” are like that, the Fox News star said that New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles all “have a major problem with filth.”
“Why is that?” Carlson wondered aloud.
“It’s a phenomenon that started 2 years ago,” Trump declared. “It’s disgraceful. I'm going to maybe—I am looking at it very seriously.”
After seemingly claiming homelessness in America only arose 24 months ago, the president went on to suggest that police officers are getting sick simply by walking near homeless people—likely referencing reports that some Los Angeles police officers have shown signs of typhoid fever. The officers all work in a precinct that was recently fined for unsanitary working conditions.
“You can’t have what’s happening—where police officers are getting sick just by walking the beat,” he exclaimed. “I mean, they’re getting actually very sick, where people are getting sick, where the people living there are living in hell, too."
While stating that mental illness is part of the reason for homelessness, Trump went on to blame the “liberal establishment” for exacerbating the problem before claiming he “ended it very quickly” in Washington, D.C. when he became president.

I'm sure Trump is referring to the sudden proliferation of homeless camps on the coasts, which began in earnest about 2-3 years ago. And he's talking about addressing it. You don't see him blaming other presidents or other scapegoats.
I remember when George W Bush was in office, and the media talked about the growing homeless problem. Then Obama was in office and all that talk went silent. Trump comes in and the talk starts up again. So you have an agenda at work there.
In any event, we (as a society) have a true problem of which the root is drug abuse and perhaps mental illness. I hope Trump does try to address it in a pragmatic way. -

So Portland and Seattle's homeless problem is due to Trump? Did I get that right because this homeless problem pre-dates him and it coincides with decisions local governments have made to provide free food, free healthcare, free shelter during the winter months, free needles, free phones, etc.
