    IIRC Rommel was stuck in Egypt and was pushed out of the Middle East by the Brits, and pro-Nazi revolutions failed in Iran and Iraq. Also, there was the fact that the oil fields there were undeveloped so the fields in the Caucasus were the more attractive option. Of course, we all know they fucked that up badly as well.
