Lake’s new deal is scheduled to pay him $4.6 million in guaranteed compensation over the next three years — $1.4 million in 2019, $1.5 million in 2020 and $1.7 million in 2021 — in addition to standard performance incentives for on-field and academic achievement. He earned $1.1 million in guaranteed compensation in 2018, a figure that ranked second among Pac-12 assistants, behind only Oregon defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, who has since left the school. Leavitt was paid $1.7 million.

The USA Today database for assistant coach salaries shows that only 10 FBS assistants earned more last year than what Lake will be paid in 2019.

Washington’s salary pool for its 2019 assistants will be $5.94 million. That’s an increase of about $500,000 from 2018.

Lake’s contract includes buyout language that would make it difficult for him to leave for another assistant’s job in the Pac-12; if he were to make such a move, he would owe UW the remaining balance of his guaranteed compensation. He would owe half of his remaining guaranteed compensation if he were to leave for any non-head-coaching job in another conference or for an NFL non-coordinator position. There is no penalty in the event Lake leaves for a college head-coaching job, or a pro head-coaching or coordinator job.

Kwiatkowski, the co-coordinator and outside linebackers coach, is in the second year of a three-year contract. He is scheduled to earn $950,000 in 2019, with that amount increasing to $1 million in 2020. Offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan, also in the second year of a three-year contract, is scheduled to earn $750,000 in 2019.

Every other UW assistant was up for a contract renewal. Defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe received a new two-year contract and a raise from $355,000 to $455,000, with an increase to $500,000 in 2020. Inside linebackers coach Bob Gregory received a new two-year contract, though his annual salary remains at $550,000. Running backs coach Keith Bhonapha received a new two-year contract along with a small raise to $380,000 per year, up from $355,000. Offensive line coach Scott Huff, also on a two-year deal, will earn $550,000 annually, up from $500,000 last year.

Assistant secondary coach Will Harris saw his pay increase from $200,000 to $230,000, with another bump to $250,000 in 2020, and new receivers coach Junior Adams signed a two-year deal worth $375,000 annually. Tight ends coach Jordan Paopao was the only assistant with an expiring contract who received an extension for one year rather than two. His salary of $300,000 remains unchanged.
