Did you guys know that Reagan only lost MN to @RaceBannon 's beloved Walter Mondale by less than 4,000 votes. This would have been the only 50 state clean sweep (DC sucks and NOC) in the history of the Republic. I had know idea it was that close.

Both Nixon and Reagan put up victories that today's candidates can only dream of
-
Nixon came close in 1972 with 49 states but McGovern still won MA 54% to 45% and got 200,000 more votes there. MA must not have been in play that year. Reagan came damn close to taking down Mondale in his home state.RaceBannon said:Both Nixon and Reagan put up victories that today's candidates can only dream of
It's mindboggling that so much of the country could agree on one candidate and platform. We're never gonna see a POTUS take more than low 50's in the popular vote any time soon, let alone get more than 40 states. -
And that was also Mondale's home state.

So apparently the Gipper was trying to be Nebraska classy and not visit MN for a rally right before the election even though his team thought he could flip it from Mondale. He thought it wasn't right to humiliate the man in his home state. Then apparently he changed his mind and visited the state last minute.greenblood said:And that was also Mondale's home state.

Country has changed quite a bit since 1984. Mondale was an old school liberal like his mentor Humphrey. They wanted a more generous and larger welfare state but there was never a doubt that both of them were patriots who loved the country. That's not true of many people on the left today.YellowSnow said:

I worked with a guy from Wyoming, then various other places in the Midwest before heading to Seattle, he was relating how throughout the Midwest Reagan had a radio program that was popular as hell.
Maybe first right wing talk radio?
He was stating that it was no surprise that the election was so lopsided because of that radio show. -
McGovern was a patriot and a war hero too. Flew B-24s out of Italy in WWII.SFGbob said:

It wasn't so much a "radio show" as it was daily/weekly radio commentary that was broadcast on stations all over the country. The commentary was only just a few minutes long and they ran a couple times a week.

Fuck off. You can say you disagree with his politics. But his war record is not in question. He got a Distinguished Flying Cross for saving his crews lives. Only medal above this is the CME.MikeDamone said:
