I don't know about imagination but just about every liberal I engage with assumes "welfare recipient" means Black person

And that's why HC thought Welfare reform was racist and why O'keefed tried to smear conservatives for thinking that thus their support for welfare reform.

A huge swath of conservative and non-conservative voters see a fat black woman, reclining on her couch (eating pastries?) when they hear the term "welfare queen". If you can't acknowledge that reality, you're pretending that you lived the last 40 years in this country without paying the slightest bit of attention. But I know you were paying attention, blob.

Did Reagan capture the white racist vote? Obviously he did. Where the Hell do you think the "Moral Majority" came from anyway? But that doesn't mean I think his voters were mostly racists.

Did his campaign play to working class white anxiety? Yes. Of course it did. But that doesn't mean I think he was a racist.

The objective is to get elected. You have to be polite to some of the most dreadful people. It's an awful process, only slightly better than the alternative.

Why are you telling me this? I'm not the one calling Reagan a racist.
