Jood rates UW's 2014 WR unit outlook as a "A-"

If Ross and Taylor both move to defense as expected (to help shore up an also dangerously thin secondary), that leaves UW with only 4 returning scholarship WRs in 2014. One of whom is returning (one hopes) from a catastrophic Lisfranc injury. Another of whom is Marvin fucking Hall.
I don't want to sound too alarmist. If Williams returns healthy, UW might turn out to be fine at WR. (Particularly if TEs Perkins and Daniels line up out wide once in a while.) LIFPO. But you have to go all the way back to 2003 (at least) to find a Husky team with less depth at WR. Even though the trend seems to be toward ever more 3- and 4-WR sets.
If this unit deserves an A-, I'd hate to see what Jood calls a B or a C.

Pease mentioned Ross in his interview, so I'm not so sure about him playing defense. It all depends on Kasen. If Kasen is healthy, the WR's will be very good.

A lisfranc injury usually takes 3-4 months to return from. Kasen is going to have twice that amount of time, he'll be fine. Stringfellow is a man-child. With Kelly in the mix now, Ross shouldn't be needed on D any more than he was at the end of last year. He's too explosive on offense(read:worth at least 2 wins) to waste as a 3rd or 4th corner, unless there are injuries ahead of him. Taylor isn't anything special, so him moving to D is no big deal. Mickens had some drops this year, but made a lot of nice plays. Add to that the fact that though Perkins and Daniels are listed as TE, they're both essentially big WR, albeit mostly unproven ones. Williams, Stringfellow, Mickens, Ross, Hall, Perkins and Daniels is a pretty solid group. Maybe not A-, but I'd say no worse than B+.

I wouldn't disagree. Williams/Stringfellow/Mickens/Ross is a WR corps that a lot of teams would kill to have.

Not very diverse. We should mandate that all teams have some Steve Largent type receiversCuntWaffle said:I wouldn't disagree. Williams/Stringfellow/Mickens/Ross is a WR corps that a lot of teams would kill to have.

Not sure where you're coming up with this. Stanback was laid up for six months, and it took over a year for him to round back into form. Derrick Johnson was out for over a year, if memory serves. Lisfrancs can be career-killing injuries:jmc84 said:A lisfranc injury usually takes 3-4 months to return from.
Six months later, he's farther along the same route previously taken by Errict Rhett, Duce Staley, Ty Law and Kevin Jones, among others. Rhett's NFL career ended following a Lisfranc injury in 2000. Staley came back after his in 2001, but was never the same. Pittsburgh cut him last December. Law returned from surgery late in 2004 to intercept a career high 10 passes for the Jets the next season.
Link.
Jones, Detroit's running back, had surgery for a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot last December. He just starting jogging on a treadmill and hopes to be ready for Lions training camp in July. -

Can we get Cody Bruns an 8th year of eligibility?

I'm just going off what they said when he got hurt. I don't have a link, but IIRC, that's what was said. -

Bruns is my least favorite Husky player ever. It's not his fault, but the love he got on doogman was sickening. He was called a great route runner by many, although he never was open. If he was black, he wouldn't have gotten half the love he did. He was the scrappy white dude that everyone loves. Problem was, he sucked, and really wasn't even very scrappy.

Yes. The way he held those balls for the kicker and threw an incomplete pass every 4th game was epic. Yes, epic.

A couple of things we might see in the future: First, CP likes to turn multiple TE's lose to run downfield and catch passes while fast WR's decoy opposing pass defenders; and Second, the defensive staff CP brought from BSU is not afraid to put young, inexperienced DB's on the field against anybody. Hopefully, we're about to see (again) that solid fundamentals and focus on discipline can make-up for lack of depth and experience at the skill positions.
-
I hope we run the fucking ball and our receivers are taught to block. Actually I don't care, I'm just glad we don't have Dr. bubble screen anymore. So exciting to have an actual plan on offense that I don't care what the personnel is next year.

I thought Williams diagnosis was changed from Lis-Franc to just a badly broken foot?
-
Our WR unit could be really good. Or the lack of depth could prove to be a problem.
It all comes down to health and how coach Petersen adapts to the big time, edgy WR recruits that Sark brought in. He could lose them right away if he comes in with hubris and a Kremlin type approach to the passing game.
It's gonna be interesting. Tune in here to get the latest reports, and drop into chat for even more hints about things we (allegedly) know but can't tell you. -
The Jood blog post linked above describes Williams' injury as "breaking his fibula (and displacing foot ligaments)." Sounds like a Lisfranc to me. But I'm not a doctor, and neither is Jood.section8 said:I thought Williams diagnosis was changed from Lis-Franc to just a badly broken foot?

Even if Kasen isn't completely healthy, we will be fine at WR. String, Mickens, and Ross are a good trio. You can put Perkins or Daniels in the slot, and I am sure we will have a freshman or 2 who can fill in and be serviceable. Without Kasen, it's not a top tier position group in the conference, but it's somewhere in the middle.

I sure hope the rest of our offseason report card looks good. No way we'll be able to compete for the P12 North without at least a B+ avg.

Here would be mine.Dardanus said:I sure hope the rest of our offseason report card looks good. No way we'll be able to compete for the P12 North without at least a B+ avg.
QB: B : I am excited about the potential here. I think Miles is pretty good, and if Williams is the guy, it means he is probably pretty good. One of these 4* guys has to be good.
RB: B+ : Could be a conservative ranking. Washington could be a stud. He looks great to me. Cooper is a wild card. I think he should be a lot better after knocking the rust off. Callier is serviceable for 4-6 carries a game. Kim said Coleman is really good, so he will probably suck.
WR: A- : I am assuming Kasen comes back. I think these guys will be fun to watch.
TE: D : I hope someone can step up. Nobody really excites me here.
OL: B+ : All 5 starters back with 2 years starting experience. No Sark or Cozzetto. I think this is the most improved unit on the team. I am drinking the Kool-Aid, but if they are an A-, we could win the North.
DL: A- : Jamora and Shelton are great. Littleton improved, but still pisses me off. There are some promising young guys. Another group I think takes a big step this year.
LB: B : Timu is pretty good, but inconsistent. Shaq has potential, but disappeared after the first few games. Feeney looks the part and acts like a maniac, but fucks up a lot. It was an overrated group last year.
CB: B : Peters is top notch. Kelly was a very coveted recruit. He needs to be as advertised or it's not looking good. Need at least 1 more quality player here, preferably 2.
S: F : Nobody here to be excited about. Hopefully we can find two guys who aren't a disaster.
Special Teams: Hopefully we have a reliable kicker. Coons is a big loss.
I think the reason this team will be able to compete with anyone is having Petersen instead of Sark, and finally getting good play out of the lines.
-
To use one guy as an example- I agree that Feeney is pretty athletic and can make good plays but he's often out of position. I hope the new coaching staff will be able to work with him and other guys who have talent but don't play with enough discipline.
