    My French prof, the late Serge Bernhard, nicknamed me "Danton" after Georges-Jacques Danton from the French Revolution. For about 2-3 years, the majority of my friends called me Danton as opposed to Derek. True story.

    On a dirty, rainy night in Issaquah In October 1992 or 1993, I walked into a CD store looking for something new. I talked to the guy behind the counter, saying I wanted something mellow and with depth. He handed me The Gentle Side of John Coltrane. That sparked it.

    For me it was a dirty, rainy afternoon at Odergard with 1960s headphones listening to Miles and Coltrane tracks assigned for History of Jazz 101.
