Both Paolo and Nolan Hickman (Gonzaga) would look good on this season's UW MBB team. As would Shane Nowell. Mike Hopkins can't even get legacy recruits like Banchero & Nowell in his program right now.

Paolo was only a passenger in the car yet he is being charged initially with aiding and abetting for riding along. The police are just trying to charge Paolo with something for whatever reason(s). How can they prove that he encouraged Michael to drive? He was just a passenger in the vehicle. How often do passengers get charged in this situation? Serious overcharge. I don't think that charge will hold up and will be dropped eventually. Paolo played tonight for Duke.

Freshman Paolo Banchero is starting for Duke in Tuesday night’s game with Gardner-Webb while junior Michael Savarino is not in uniform. The two were charged in a driving while impaired incident early Sunday morning.

The 6-foot-10, 250-pound Banchero was charged with aiding and abetting a DWI after he and Savarino were pulled over by state Highway Patrol officers around 1:10 a.m. Sunday. The 19-year-old Banchero was charged and released at the scene while Savarino, 20, was arrested and charged with DWI. His breathalyzer reading was 0.08.

Savarino, a former walk-on who was put on scholarship this season, is the grandson of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. He is not on the bench with the team.

Banchero is a projected NBA Draft Lottery pick should he leave Duke following this season as expected. He has averaged 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds this season for No. 7 Duke (3-0). Krzyzewski is expected to address the situation following Tuesday night’s game.

NBA draft No. 1 pick debate: Chet Holmgren or Paolo Banchero?

Las Vegas has been the center of the basketball world since Sunday, with team presidents and general managers bouncing back and forth between arenas to evaluate the next wave of NBA players. After a long week of scouting and schmoozing, the large contingent of NBA executives will be treated to the premier evaluation opportunity of the season, and one of the best true head-to-head prospect matchups in recent memory: Duke's Paolo Banchero vs. Gonzaga's Chet Holmgren.

The battle for the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft continues Friday at T-Mobile Arena at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Two of the best programs in the country, featuring the two best NBA prospects in the nation. Banchero and Holmgren are about as different big men prospects as you'll find. Banchero is the more polished of the two. Physical, powerful and skilled with an NBA-ready body and game. Holmgren is lean and lanky, with shot-blocking instincts, 3-point shooting and grab-and-go ability that are staples of the modern NBA.

So what will scouts be looking for? What is the argument for and against either Holmgren or Banchero as the No. 1 pick? Can anyone else challenge them?

What is the case for and against Banchero as the No. 1 pick?

Paolo Banchero leads Duke to a big win over CitadelPaolo Banchero posts 31 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists in Duke's 107-81 win over Citadel.
Banchero is as ready an NBA prospect as you'll find. Plug him in an NBA game tomorrow and he could give you 20 points and 10 rebounds. As expected, he's been incredibly productive through his first six games with averages of 17.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in just 28 minutes a night while shooting 62% from 2 and 31% from 3. For context, only three high-major prospects have reached those per-game averages throughout a full collegiate season since 2000: Zion Williamson (Duke), Ben Simmons (LSU) and Carmelo Anthony (Syracuse). Not bad company for the potential No. 1 pick.

Most executives left Madison Square Garden on opening night enamored with the 19-year-old freshman and his polished offensive game. It's rare to see a player with his powerful, 6-10, 250-pound frame handle the ball with such grace and effortlessness. Not only is he a load with the physicality of a young Blake Griffin or Julius Randle, but he's also incredibly fluid and has the type of shot creation potential teams look for in a No. 1 option. Unlike Holmgren, he can get to a shot whenever he wants in midrange areas, using a variety of pro moves ranging from spins to inside pivots to turnarounds, and he's a nightmare cover in transition with a head of steam a la Simmons. A former quarterback, he can really pass the ball in space as well. That vision was more apparent than ever during his 28-point, 8-rebound, 6-assist game in a win over The Citadel on Monday, highlighted by an effortless, one-handed flick pass that went 50 feet in the air right into the hands of a streaking teammate for the open finish.

He's the type of modern big you can run your offense through with regularity, while Holmgren isn't quite there yet as a true hub given some of his physical limitations. Banchero moves his feet incredibly well for his size and even has the agility to function as a big 3 in some jumbo lineups -- like we've seen from forwards like Philadelphia's Tobias Harris -- while possessing the strength to slide up to the 5 for stretches.

So why would NBA executives second-guess selecting a 250-pound wrecking ball with the handle of a guard and the mid-post polish of Jayson Tatum or Anthony? While Holmgren possesses incredible length, Banchero has an average wingspan (7-1) and reach relative to his position, and he doesn't make up for that with the elite standstill vertical explosiveness you'll see from the NBA's top leapers. Although equipped with incredible touch, will he be able to power through opponents and finish with the same level of efficiency against NBA length? We'll get our answer after he faces the draft's best shot-blocker in Holmgren.

Against Holmgren in a practice setting at the Iverson Classic in Memphis, Banchero struggled to create efficient offense, living off his midrange jumper quite a bit. The question then becomes: How many of the NBA's best bigs are true power forward types who don't really protect the rim or shoot 3s at a high level? Banchero's free throw stroke and midrange game indicate he'll be a good 3-point shooter, potentially even off the dribble someday given his footwork and handle, but he is only 5-for-16 from distance so far and it remains to be seen how his stroke will translate to the NBA line. Much like Tatum at Duke, he also has some catch-and-hold, dribble-happy tendencies that he'd benefit from addressing as he'd become far more efficient and would further unlock his passing potential. While Banchero is more physically ready and polished, does he impact the game in enough ways when he isn't scoring? Does he hold the same upside as the shot-blocking, 3-point shooting, passing Holmgren?

Who is your No. 1 right now?

I've long considered Holmgren the best prospect in this class, and while I've been blown away by Banchero's NBA-ready game and skill level, I'm a firm believer Holmgren should be the No. 1 pick if the draft were today. Like we said about several of the top picks in last year's draft, both Banchero and Holmgren are special prospects, No. 1-caliber guys and franchise pillars. Some top-end executives see Holmgren as the clear-cut top prospect, while others favor Banchero and his ready-made game.

With that said, I'm not sure Holmgren is getting the type of credit he deserves as a truly elite prospect, largely because he doesn't have a prototypical NBA body. To signify just how unique Holmgren's all-around impact is, he's the only player in college basketball history to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks per 40 minutes.

He's far tougher than a prospect like Porzingis ever was, and you could argue that Holmgren is even more advanced as a shot-blocker and shooter than Mobley was as a freshman. Playing alongside an aggressive All-American like Drew Timme, I'm fairly certain Gonzaga's star freshman won't be as outwardly productive as Banchero in the points and rebounds department, but his impact on the game is more widespread, and it's harder to find players in his mold, especially with his no-nonsense approach to the game.

How badly has a team like the Pelicans needed a shot-blocking, floor-spacing big man to pair with Zion? Don't be surprised if Banchero bullies Holmgren some in their one-on-one possessions in T-Mobile Arena, but past evidence suggests he won't back down from the challenge, talking a bit of trash along the way. While it's early and there's still a lot to learn, I'd bet on Holmgren's length, shot-blocking, shooting, passing and all-business attitude if I were on the clock with the first overall pick.

After scoring 20 points in the 1st half Paolo had to deal with severe cramps in the 2nd half and missed around 9-10 minutes of game time after going in the locker room to get an IV. But no doubt about it as Paolo looked like the top 2022 NBA draft pick in this game.

Banchero is a man. Best player on the floor last night. Two best teams in the country right thurr.

Holmgren is a freak but absolutely has to gain strength. He'll get snapped in half by NBA adults.

    Great game to watch.

    247 Sports https://247sports.com/Article/Duke-basketballs-Paolo-Banchero-will-be-No-1-according-to-NBA-scout-176466430/

Duke forward Paolo Banchero certainly made a strong case to be taken first overall in the next NBA Draft, scoring 20 first-half points in Duke's win over Gonzaga before cramps limited him in the second half. And at least one NBA decision-maker agreed, according to Forbes' Adam Zagoria.

“He will be No. 1 [because of] his size, strength and ability to score at all 3 levels,” the anonymous general manager or scout told Forbes.

He did that while playing on the same stage as his primary competition to go No. 1: Gonzaga's Chet Holmgren. The No. 1 overall player in the 247Sports Composite, Holmgren had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots, and he did alter several other looks as well.

“Chet’s a great player," Banchero said after the game. "Like you said, we’ve played against each other before. I think he played well. He made some tough shots. Obviously, you know he’s a game changer on defense. I had a couple of layups that usually, against anybody else, I would score, or it’d be a dunk, but because Chet’s down there I wasn’t able to finish like that. That’s just an example of how he changes the game. He also brings a skilled game on the offensive end so yeah, great player for sure.”

Banchero finished one spot behind Holmgren in the 247Sports Composite, sitting at No. 2. And he showed a full scoring repertoire against the Bulldogs, making 3-of-6 3-pointers and shaking loose for some mid-range looks with his handle and footwork as well. Then there's his body: At 6-foot-10 and 250 pounds, Banchero is physically advanced enough to be able to take full advantage of his skill set. Holmgren is 7-0 and boasts a 7-6 wingspan, but at a rail-thin 195 pounds, there's some question about whether he'll be able to hold up against stronger players at the next level.

But that's a question for the future. On Friday night, Banchero's burst was enough to help Duke land an 84-81 victory, and in all likelihood, the No. 1 spot in both polls when they're released Monday.

“Coming into the game, we just wanted to be ourselves," Banchero said. "Like Mark said, we weren’t trying to get outside of ourselves. Obviously, we know they’re the No. 1 team and they’re a high-powered machine, but we felt like if we played our best and did what we do best, we were going to have a real shot and be able to come out with a win. Since the offseason, everyday we’ve tried to come in and be consistent and practice well. One thing [we emphasize] is no bad practices. We try to have as a standard on our team so when you just stack days like that, come in every day and be consistent, in big games like this you’re able to pull out wins and battle it out.”

    Paolo Banchero | 6-10 | PF | Age: 19.0 | Duke | No. 2

Banchero's 20-point first half against Gonzaga was one of the most impressive displays of skill, power and aggressiveness we've seen from a freshman in some time. Armed with the freedom to bust out off the defensive glass, initiate and reject pick-and-rolls with 7-1 teammate Williams setting ball-screens and pull up off the dribble from beyond the arc in transition, the fireworks Banchero unleashed give him an easy case to be considered the No. 1 pick in the draft.

Banchero seemingly heard the questions scouts posed regarding his shooting range and his willingness to pass. He responded by making 7-of-16 3-pointers and dishing out 11 assists in the past three games. Banchero further helped himself by making hustle plays in transition and showing his awareness and smarts with some solid closeouts, another area that NBA executives have nitpicked at times. He does have some moments where he looks somewhat lethargic off the ball, or a split-second late reacting on the glass or rotating to challenge shots at the rim, so continuing to defend with energy will be important for his No. 1 pick candidacy.

With an NBA-ready frame, the type of skill set that should translate seamlessly and likely the highest floor of any player in this draft, Banchero could slide into an NBA game tomorrow and post similar numbers to what he's producing at Duke with the benefit of added spacing and tempo. To cement himself as the No. 1 pick, Banchero will need to show that he can continue to grow on the defensive end and do enough little things to help an NBA team win games, something he's in an ideal situation to do. Ultimately, it would be foolish to overthink Banchero's scoring instincts, productivity and versatility, as he's clearly a special talent that virtually any NBA team would be thrilled to build around.

Duke’s Paolo Banchero Is A Modern Big Man With An Old-School Shot Profile

There was no shortage of polish in the first college basketball game of Paolo Banchero’s career. The 19-year-old Duke forward picked apart a top-10 opponent with an array of skills seldom packaged in a 6-foot-10, 225-plus-pound frame: off-the-bounce jumpers, two-handed explosive dunks, patience and persistence, size and strength. There was a certain quietness to the performance, too: Banchero didn’t lead the Blue Devils in scoring, shot attempts or minutes played, but he was undoubtedly the most instrumental player on the court.

Among freshmen at Division I schools, Banchero ranks fifth in points (17.8), 15th in total rebounds (7.3) and tied for ninth in win shares (1.4). He’s shooting 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 83.8 percent from the stripe.1 Two of Banchero’s three biggest scoring outbursts of the season have come at major venues in top-10 showdowns: against Kentucky at Madison Square Garden in the Champions Classic and against Gonzaga at T-Mobile Arena in the Continental Tire Challenge. Banchero put up 20-plus points in each win — against the Bulldogs, Banchero outplayed Chet Holmgren, the top-rated player in their recruiting class and Banchero’s main competition for the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NBA draft.

Much of Banchero’s unorthodox abilities are the byproduct of multiple growth spurts, not unlike Anthony Davis, who learned the sport before he grew 8 inches in 18 months. Banchero grew up as a guard with ball-handling responsibilities, then he grew almost 6 inches before high school and another few inches as a freshman. There are reports that he’s grown to 6-foot-11 since his arrival in Durham. The tallest player on the court is seldom able to or asked to bring the ball up the court, but in non-dead ball scenarios Banchero has repeatedly initiated the Duke offense, which takes a by-committee approach to point-guard duties.
